******* It looks like another Food Network regular has scored a magazine deal. Hoffman Media, the company behind "Cooking with Paula Deen," is planning to publish a new magazine with Sandra Lee, a New York Times-bestselling author, who has also made a few appearances on People magazine's 50 Most Beautiful People list. Hoffman Media LLC is offering a subscription for six issues of Sandra Lee Semi-Homemade magazine for $19.98, to begin with the February/March premiere issue. The cover price will be $4.99 and it will be published six times a year with a print run of 280,000. It will have recipes, entertaining tips and home decor advice. More information could not be learned, as Sandra Lee did not return calls by press time.

The pains affecting consumer magazines are trickling down to its lobbying association. Magazine Publishers of America laid off seven staffers, according to sources. A spokesman said that because of declines in its members’ core print publishing operations, “it was necessary to streamline operations.” After the cuts, MPA will have 36 employees. Rate-card reported ad pages for consumer magazines are down 3.1 percent in the first half of ’08 and 8.2 percent in the second quarter, with particularly steep declines in the auto, technology and pharma categories, according to Publishers Information Bureau, a service of MPA. The cuts come during the run-up to MPA’s annual American Magazine Conference, which takes place Oct. 5-7 in San Francisco.

Having snapped up Time Inc.’s parenting books last year, Bonnier Corp. is adding to its stable of women’s magazines, buying up Working Mother Media from investment bank MCG Capital and Carol Evans, its founder and CEO. Working Mother Media publishes 831,150-circ Working Mother magazine, which comes out eight times a year. It also produces the research initiative, “100 Best Companies,” for working moms. Terry Snow, CEO of Bonnier Corp., said the “acquisition of Working Mother Media allows Bonnier to strengthen our foothold in the mom market and offer advertisers the most comprehensive variety of media platforms reaching mom consumers.” Evans will stay on as president of what will become the Working Mother group at Bonnier. Anna Wintour needs to watch her couture-clad back. "Elle's October issue scored 66 more ad pages than Vogue," a source told Page Six - a figure which doesn't sit well with her boss S.I. Newhouse, who may have already found her successor. At a party for Russian GQ earlier this week in Moscow, one attendee told Page Six, "The event's announcer introduced [Russian Vogue editrix Aliona Doletskaya] as 'The next editor of American Vogue.' " Doletskaya was the recent subject of a New York Times profile that boasted of her "lithe physique" and "foxlike features." Asked about the Doletskaya remark in Moscow, a Vogue spokesperson told Page Six, "These variations are nothing unusual for magazine publishing, and we have the greatest admiration for every editor in chief of all the international Vogues." Elle happily confirmed that the magazine's newsstand and ad pages are up.

In this green age, Allure editor in chief Linda Wells is taking the cosmetics industry to task for its excessive product packaging. In her October editor's letter, Wells urges the industry to cut back in order to reduce waste. "The packaging of expensive beauty products has gotten out of control," she writes. "Some cosmetics companies seem to believe that all these layers create a sense of luxury, that they make the product look precious, like a Valentine's present from Harry Winston. But that idea is pass?." Wells' call to action is noteworthy considering the October issue is its Best of Beauty edition. The issue recognizes cosmetics and grooming aids for their effectiveness and innovation, and is filled with product samples. Beauty firms consider the awards a major fillip (evidenced by the advertising: the October issue is the largest in Allure's history with 209 ad pages). Wells said she'd been thinking about the packaging of products months before Best of Beauty was published, but thought the letter would have the most impact appearing in the awards issue. And while Wells tested "$200 firming creams, scrubs of every flavor on each limb and more perfumes than you'd find in an entire Moroccan souk," she found that, "by the time I'd unwrapped three products, my wastebasket was filled." The night before my first day interning at a major magazine, I tried on a modest outfit: a pair of flared jeans and a collared button-down shirt. A floormate and burgeoning New York fashionista took one look at me and said, “You’re not going dressed like that, are you?” She lectured me on skinny jeans and H&M bangles before following me to my room, sifting through my drab closet, and finding a decent sleeveless top and beige skirt I once wore to a restaurant. After strapping on my only pair of four-inch pumps, I was ready to hobble my way to my dream job. When I arrived at the gleaming Hearst Tower with its indoor waterfall and heavenly caf?, I was instantly awed. I called my mom to tell her: “OMFG! This is exactly like The Devil Wears Prada!” before stepping into the office. The first girl I met was blonde and clearly not from New York. Her every sentence implied an exclamation mark—definitely a fellow intern. Before I met anyone else, she gave me the unofficial intern commandments. MORE ONLINE Ed Ads Hey!
