With all of the bad economic news (made clear last week by President Bush's speech supporting the White House's $700 billion financial-institution bailout), we would have expected a clean (or, better put, "dirty") downward ad sweep by the weeklies/biweeklies with tomorrow's (September 30) end of the third quarter. Mostly true, but there is OK! (+31.06% through September), with help from its Buzz! mini-magazine with ABC-TV's Dirty Sexy Money. And there is Fortune (+2.70%), which we hear has been helped by its integrated marketing campaigns. Plus, managing editor Andy Serwer, like his rivals, has been media omnipresent. MORE ONLINE

Magazine Publishers of America, which recently cut seven staffers from its headcount, announced a new hire in veteran editor Sid Holt, who was named chief executive for the American Society of Magazine Editors (ASME). The position is a newly created post at the industry?s chief lobbying association. Holt most recently served as editorial director of Mediaweek parent Nielsen Business Media until 2007, and from 1998 to 2004 as executive vp and editor in chief of Adweek Magazines (now AdweekMedia). Earlier, Holt had served as managing editor of Rolling Stone from 1990 to 1997, becoming vp of parent Wenner Media in 1995. In his new role at ASME, he?ll be charged with growing ASME membership, developing programs for editors, helping them navigate the challenges of a changing media landscape and increasing participation by digital publishers. Longtime ASME executive director Marlene Kahan will report to Holt. MPA cited ad declines in the industry in making the staff cuts, which leave the organization with a headcount of 36.

Osborn Elliott, a giant of American journalism and a tireless crusader for revitalizing America's cities, died on Sunday in New York City. He was 83. The cause was complications from cancer, his family said. As NEWSWEEK's top editor in the 1960s and 1970s, Elliott transformed a magazine that had been a faint rival of Time into a nimble competitor. While Time was slow to evolve from the conservative path laid down by its founder Henry Luce, NEWSWEEK under Elliott pursued an ambitious, liberal agenda that gave the magazine a sharper identity and sense of mission. For those accomplishments, Elliott, known to his friends as "Oz," was among the first to be voted into the American Society of Magazine Editors' Hall of Fame. MORE ONLINE

Liz Smith is sitting front and center at Michael?s, still a media whorehouse after all these years. It is the Wednesday after Labor Day and everyone is back. Smith herself just flew in from the Hamptons on a helicopter with Pete Peterson and his wife, Joan. You can practically smell the pent-up neediness?the yearning to get back in the spotlight?emanating from all these show-offs in their new fall wardrobes. Indeed, there is so much boldface here today that Smith?s blonde bobbed head is spinning. Next to us on one side is Les Moonves, sipping a glass of white wine. (?He didn?t introduce me to his lunch companion.?) Kathleen Turner arrives to sit on the other side of us, and Smith jumps up. (?I feel I should rise for her. I can?t let her come to me.?) When life handed British journalist Toby Young lemons, as the cliche goes, he made lemonade. Not just any lemonade. After getting fired from his dream job as a writer for Vanity Fair magazine -- for repeatedly embarrassing editor Graydon Carter with stunts such as sending a strippergram to a colleague on Take Our Daughters to Work Day and snorting cocaine with bad-boy artist Damien Hirst during a photo shoot -- Young published a memoir in 2001 about his self-abuse and social stupidity titled "How to Lose Friends & Alienate People." But it didn't end there. Young continued to take his limited experiences and juice them beyond any reasonable expectation. He created an extensive body of work based around a handful of personal misfortunes and embarrassing social interactions, backdropped by Manhattan's gimlet swirl and peopled by vapid fashionistas, snobs and boldfaced names. Smith September 29, 2008 http://www.wwd.com/media-news/fashion-memopad/wall-street-crisis-book-deals-already-a-jingle-for-mens-vogue-1805475?navSection=media-news&toc_preselected=65#/article/media-news/fashion-memopad/wall-street-crisis-book-deals-already-a-jingle-for-mens-vogue-1805475?page=2 Jay Fielden is spelling it out for those who are still unclear about what Men?s Vogue brings to the table that is distinct from other men?s lifestyle titles. The magazine will introduce a new tagline ? ?Style is how you live? ? with the November issue, the first mission statement set forth by the Cond? Nast title. ?Men like a good motto, and I?m one of them,? said Fielden. ?We?re raising our rate base to 400,000 in January, which is a lot of readers, but I still feel that there are a number of people out there that haven?t discovered the mag. One thing people remember when meeting someone new is a clever line of introduction. I think this one will win us a bunch of new friends.? And perhaps, advertisers.? The tagline reflects the magazine?s coverage of expensive toys, vacations and the people who partake, but Fielden said style doesn?t equate to expensive. To help readers consume luxury goods smarter, the magazine will introduce the ?MV Scorecard? ? think a cross between ?Consumer Reports and the Michelin Guide,? the editor in chief said. MORE ONLINE
