Dubai Still has lots of Money

With massive consolidation in the U.S. financial sector and oil prices still high, Doubledown Media is heading to where the money is. The publisher of Trader Monthly and Dealmaker started printing the former in Dubai this summer, and now it has revealed plans to launch the second title there, too. Randall Lane, president, said both magazines will be sent to a targeted group of readers ? all of whom easily have an annual household income north of $600,000. ?We?ve seen readers grow in the emerging markets,? said Lane. ?It?s really become a global community.?

To publish the Middle Eastern editions, Doubledown has partnered with a Dubai-based start-up, International Media Ventures. Launch advertisers for Dealmaker include Omega, Bentley and Infiniti. The company also publishes both magazines in the U.K., although the financial sector there isn?t any better than its U.S. cousin?s. ?Our readers are more likely to be transferred to London, Hong Kong or Dubai than, say, Toledo,? said Lane. ?We are expanding globally. We?ve seen a lot of interest in what we do. We?re certainly not slowing down.?

Jewish Living Magazine Folds
September 30, 2008
http://myhogtown.blogspot.com/2008/09/jewish-living-magazine-folds.html

Sad news. Jewish Living magazine, the New York-based publication Carol Moskot and husband Dan Zimerman started last year, has announced they're folding after five issues. Moskot, the former art director of Toronto Life, moved up to NY with Zimerman last year to start the mag. The publication received tons of press when it launched, but the economy is something they couldn't defeat. "Launched in November 2007 and named one of the top launches of the year by Media Industry News, Jewish Living was already making headlines with features in The New York Times, The Washington Post, New York Daily News, New York Post, Mediaweek, Gawker, Jossip, Folio and others," write Moskot and Zimerman in their goodbye letter. "Jewish Living was fortunate to have attracted a significant subscriber base, committed advertisers and the respect of the editorial and creative community. However, given current economic conditions, it has become increasingly difficult to ensure sustainable funding and therefore the ongoing viability of the business."

Newsweek publisher the Washington Post Company has acquired Foreign Policy magazine and its accompanying Web site from Washington, D.C.-based Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

It was not immediately clear if any layoffs are associated with the acquisition. A WPC spokesperson did not immediately return a request for comment.

However, according to a knowledgeable source, Foreign Policy managing editor William Dobson was laid off last week. He had been with the magazine for four years.

A New Helping of Food Magazines
By Shira Ovide and Emily Steel

A new batch of magazines is about to test America's appetite for more food publications.

In recent years, an increase in the number of home chefs -- or at least people armed with gleaming All-Clad pots and good intentions -- has prompted a flurry of magazines and Web sites devoted to cooking, recipe swapping and epicurean lifestyles. There will be 336 such magazines published this year, nearly a third more than in 2003, according to the National Directory of Magazines. Many of those titles have shown brisk circulation growth.

Now, the category is about to get even more crowded. In its first foray into food, Hearst Corp. recently started the Delish Web site in partnership with Microsoft Corp., and next month, Hearst will launch a test of the Food Network Magazine. Rodale's Prevention magazine is adding a new brand called Cook!, and Hoffman Media, publisher of Southern Lady, will roll out a magazine tied to TV cooking personality Sandra Lee.
