Memo Pad: NOT OUT OF THE GAME

Though recent reports have said that OK is no longer in the market to buy celebrity photos, the magazine is, in fact, shelling out six figures for pictures of Jamie Lynn Spears and her baby daddy, Casey Aldridge. The teenage parents sat for an exclusive interview with the magazine to speak about marriage, parenthood and Aldridge?s supposed infidelities. OK has featured Spears and her sister, Britney, and their offspring in the magazine regularly (Jamie Lynn has appeared on five covers in 12 months, with and without her newborn).

While the parents certainly didn?t fetch Brangelina-like fees for the images, the magazine paid upward of $100,000 for the photos. As for who will be named the magazine?s next editor in chief to replace Sarah Ivens, OK?s new U.S. boss Kent Brownridge said an announcement could come in the next week or three.

Guideposts Editor: '[People] Want to See Themselves in the Magazine'

User-generated content was the topic on one of this afternoon?s con-current panel discussion at the 2008 American Magazine Conference. Kevin McKean of Consumer Reports and ConsumerReports.org moderated the group which included Mitchell Fox, president and CEO, 8020 Media; Chris Johns, editor-in-chief, National Geographic; Susan Kane, editorial director and editor-in-chief, the Parenting Group; Edward Grinnan, editor-in-chief and vice president, Guideposts and Guideposts.com; and Alexandra Bandon, multimedia editor, This Old House.

Bandon, whose magazine put out an entire user-generated issue this June, spoke first. "We learned a lot about ourselves," she said, adding that despite not paying contributors for their content, "We spent pretty much the same amount of money, but we had to build a $40,000 Web site." This Old House hopes to put out another issue next year, and Bandon revealed that advertisers "got very excited about it when it was in their hands."

Meredith's family of women-oriented publications are a natural for overseas licensing, company officials contend, because many of the titles deal with health, family and home-related themes. The list of licensing agreements now includes five parenting-related publications and three versions of Better Homes and Gardens, plus six diabetes- or health-related publications.

After the jump, more revelations from the other four panelists (in quick, easy bullet point form because I'm tired and I'm sure you're sick of reading).

The Gawker Guide to A Journalism Career

So, you want to be a journalist? Ha ha ha. Jeez. Your timing sucks. But hey, it's a perfectly semi-honorable profession; nobler than finance, not as noble as being a postman. So whether you're already in journalism and wondering about what direction your career should take (besides down), or a terribly misguided young go-getter looking to get into journalism, we're here to help. Every freaking thing you need to know about the real state of the media job market, after the jump.

Newspapers. Forget it. Really. This is the worst place of all to either be employed, or be looking for employment. An easy rule of thumb: only the very top and the very bottom of the newspaper industry even have a sliver of light at the end of the tunnel. National papers?NYT, WSJ, Washington Post, USA Today?at least have strong enough brands to possibly pull through and prosper in the future.

Tiny local papers are okay, since they have no internet competition to speak of. But every city paper in the population range from Spokane to Chicago is going to get slammed hard for the forthcoming future. Not the best job prospect. (Except in India. Print is exploding there! If you like naan as much as journalism, buy yourself a plane ticket).

AMC Notebook: Hearst?s Loughlin Calls the State of Publishing ?Incredibly Fragile?
By Lucia Moses

The American Magazine Conference taking place in San Francisco started its first full day Oct. 6 on an auspicious note, as attendees arose to find the stock market?and their portfolios' value--had plummeted another several hundred points that morning, compounding last week's tumultuous losses. And so the conference kicked off, with presenters cataloguing the industry's worries that seemed even more dire than in recent years.

With the market crisis' anticipated impact on ad budgets, magazines will find it hard to offset further postal and paper costs coming next year. At retail, the newsstand situation is uncertain, with stores cutting checkout and mainline display space for magazines and wholesalers, themselves in financial peril, pulling copies out of the system to cut costs. And the Magazine Publishers of America is concerned that a revenue-hungry Congress will seek to wring more money out of businesses by removing tax deductions on advertising and reversing a cap on postal price increases in the year ahead.

A clampdown on over-the-counter drug advertising also remains a worry. Turnout at the annual conference, which has been following a long-term trend of declining attendance, was down 10 percent this year to 440, which was interpreted as a sign that with the state of the industry, many publishing executives felt they could do more good by skipping the confab and focusing on their businesses.

Hearst Magazines, publisher of Good Housekeeping and Cosmo, today announced plans for the rollout of the recipe-themed Food Network Magazine, which it is publishing in partnership with the Food Network. Targeting food lovers and avid fans of the Food Network, the magazine will draw on the cable network's stars for accessible recipes and tips.

The premiere test issue, as first reported by Mediaweek , will include an array of Food Network talent, including Ina Garten and Paula Deen, as well as Tyler Florence, Guy Fieri and Alton Brown. The editor in chief is Maile Carpenter, who was wooed away from her gig as executive editor of Every Day With Rachael Ray. A publisher is expected to be named shortly, a spokesperson said.

There will be two test issues and then five subsequent issues planned for 2009. The magazine will make its debut on newsstands on Oct. 14 and a second test is planned for January 2009. Food Network Magazine will launch with June/July 2009 issue and will publish four issues through the year.
