******* New York magazine Editor-in-Chief Adam Moss was among the no-shows at this year's American Magazine Conference, but his magazine dominated the third annual best covers award handed out by the American Society of Magazine Editors. The Cover of the Year was New York's March 24 issue featuring a Henry Leutwyler photograph of disgraced New York Governor Eliot Spitzer with the word "brain" in a bright red box and an arrow pointing to Spitzer's groin area. The judges cited the award for its "directness, humor and simplicity. The cover required no headlines. The image succeeds all by itself." MORE ONLINE

Echoing his So What Do You Do? interview from last week, Runner's World editor-in-chief and current American Society of Magazine Editors president David Willey offered a positive view of the future in his address to the American Magazine Conference Tuesday morning. "I don't think print is dead or even dying," the editor said. Still, he's focused on helping ASME transition into the digital age, both with new groups such as ASME Next — targeting younger editors — and new digital guidelines. About these rules, which should be passed soon, Willey joked "at times, it has felt that we were passing a $700 billion bailout package." The organization recently hired Sid Holt to be its first ever CEO and he'll be tasked with growing membership, raising ASME's profile, and working with MPA to advance shared agendas on government affairs, audience measurement, magazine branded digital initiatives, sponsorships and sustainability. Increasingly, magazines are finding that championing charitable causes is not only good for the soul, but it's also good for the bottom line. Rodale senior vice president, editor-in-chief, Men's Health and editorial director, Best Life David Zinczenko — perhaps the current champion of cross-promotion — moderated a panel on cause marketing featuring Stacy Morrison, editor-in-chief, Redbook; Linda Fears, editor-in-chief, Family Circle; and Colin Kearns, senior editor, Field & Stream. Morrison, who cut her cause marketing teeth while championing the prevention of domestic abuse during her time at Marie Claire, brought the practice to her new publication. "There isn't a single issue of Redbook that doesn't have some sort of cause-related issue in it," she said. Kearns, whose magazine oversees the "Heroes of Conservation" program, thought the initiative helped dress up an otherwise bland subject. "We'll compare conservation to broccoli," the editor explained. "It's important, you need it, but it's not that much fun. ... 'Heroes of Conservation' is the nice cheese to put on our broccoli." A week before September 11, Heather Hartle and her then-husband Tom launched 7x7, a glossy city magazine focused on downtown San Francisco. Seven years later, the publication is going strong.(Additionally, Hartle Media now owns California Home + Design while its partner The McEvoy Group bought Spin in 2006.) On Tuesday, we spoke with Hartle for a So What Do You Do? article running in a few weeks. During the discussion, she told us about a planned redesign of both the magazine and its Web site coming shortly. "Our current Web site is going to be relaunching in November. We're already doing Web 2.0. We have one main editor on the Web and everyone [on staff] who writes for the magazine is starting to write for the Web. I have a pool of freelancers and bloggers. We've culled the best of the best from the area who have their own blogs and highlight them on the Web site. MORE ONLINE

Vanity Fair is no stranger when it comes to cover story controversies. When Graydon Carter's "downstairs neighbors" at The New Yorker got in trouble for their satiric cover with Barack and Michelle doing some terrorist fist bumping in the Oval Office, Vanity Fair was right there with a parody of their own to lessen the tension. Since then, the NYer cover (they did it as a goof!) has been subject of several more artist mock-ups, ostensibly to show America how silly it is to have gotten its feathers all ruffled over that one silly cover, when John McCain and Sarah Palin are out there right now essentially putting that sentiment into words. But since there will always be new and exciting ways to mimic other magazine covers, Vanity Fair figured they had one good push left in them. MORE ONLINE

Publishing a magazine today demands that editors and publishers look beyond the page to connect with readers and develop new sources of revenue. But sometimes those goals can conflict, leading those efforts to fall flat with readers, magazine executives conceded at this year's American Magazine Conference in San Francisco, which ended Tuesday (Oct. 7). When publications try to build loyalty with readers by embracing social and environmental causes, enlisting advertising support can be fraught with peril if the marketer's mission isn't compatible with the cause, editors said. About a month ago, Vanity Fair deputy editor Doug Stumpf took Michael Lewis out to dinner at his boss Graydon Carter’s Waverly Inn. Mr. Stumpf brought along fellow Vanity Fair editor Punch Hutton and contributing editor Bethany McLean to help split the $55 truffled macaroni-and-cheese plates for the table. Mr. Lewis, who has been (and still is, at press time) on contract with The New York Times Magazine and Portfolio, had been wined and dined by magazine editors before. But this trip to Graydon Carter’s own private-public domain was a first. And now, Mr. Lewis has given Vanity Fair an oral agreement that he will drop both of those contracts, and he will sign exclusively with them. MORE ONLINE Ed Ad 1 BEDROOM AVAILABLE W.
