******* A year after taking over as chief executive of Newsweek, Tom Ascheim has started to make his presence felt. Last week, Ascheim took steps to beef up the sales side, hiring a new ?ber-salesperson and general manager of online. Now, he’s scrutinizing the print edition, ordering up secret “fantasy” versions of the pub from editors and outsiders including design guru Roger Black, who consulted on the weekly’s revamp last year. Both Time and Newsweek last year issued new looks that put a greater emphasis on text and fewer but more dramatic photos. In recent months, Newsweek has run more long-form stories, essays and pieces from outside contributors. Both also have shrunk their guaranteed circulation, with Newsweek slashing its rate base by 16 percent to 2.6 million in January, a year after Time cut its by 19 percent to 3.25 million. MORE ONLINE

In the push to build community and generate advertising opportunities by harnessing content created by audiences, magazines have solicited reader photos and feedback (National Geographic, Parents), created issues that are entirely reader-generated (This Old House, Arthur Frommer’s Budget Travel) and started weaving community elements through their Web sites (Woman’s Day). The upcoming launch of Mixingbowl.com represents Meredith Corp.’s first attempt at creating an independent social network. Mixingbowl takes the approach that authentic community building must happen outside the digital spinoffs of its established print products, which include Better Homes and Gardens and Parents. The site provides a venue for consumers to share recipes and connect with others on food-related community groups. Due to launch in late November, Mixingbowl is powered by technology company Ripple6, which has built local mom networks for Gannett Co. and a health information site for Procter & Gamble. MORE ONLINE

There will be no more gym or free snacks at Inc. and Fast Company now that parent Mansueto Ventures is laying off 20 people in a broad cost-cutting effort. The books have fared relatively well in terms of ad pages in an otherwise soft market; Fast Company’s pages soared 24.8 percent to 474.8 this year through October, while Inc.’s gained 3.8 percent to 684, per Mediaweek Monitor. Yet CEO John Koten said in a staff memo that despite Fast Company’s growth, expenses were rising faster than revenue as the publishing industry business has softened. “To ensure our best chance of getting through this rough time and continuing our positive momentum, we must take major steps now,” he wrote. “Unfortunately, this has meant making choices that will be hurtful to some of our fellow employees.” MORE ONLINE

In those flush times a year or so ago, food magazines often seemed to focus on recipes that required the most indulgent ingredients (remember Gourmet’s goat tacos that started with instructions on how to kill a goat?). No more. Budget-friendly recipes, as well as restaurant and wine recommendations, are rapidly becoming a larger part of the editorial mix as editors seek to cater to their readers’ new penny-pinching ways. Take Bon App?tit, which will theme its entire January “Best of the Year” issue around Champagne taste on a beer budget (and not a microbrewery, either). “The overriding feel is it’s possible to eat well and have value and still feel indulged and well-fed without busting your bank account,” said editor in chief Barbara Fairchild. For example, in a story on stylish dinner parties, “instead of calling for osetra caviar, which costs $400 for less than 2 oz., we start out with American spoonfish caviar at $49 for 2 oz.” The story also includes a recipe for a mussel bisque instead of a lobster bisque. A wine story will cover “10 Reds and 10 Whites for Under $20,” and the magazine’s “Fast Easy Fresh” column will include a week of dinners for a total of $100 — seven entr?es and a dessert included, with a shopping list (the popular column also is being turned into a cookbook, which will be released next week).
