Memo Pad: TORI’S NEW WEB RECRUIT

After 12 years at In Style, assistant managing editor Honor Brodie is leaving to be editor in chief of Tory Burch’s Web site. The site, which so far has focused on company information and e-tailing, will relaunch in late November with more content, echoing other brands like Polo Ralph Lauren and Isaac Mizrahi that have taken the lead in providing their own content beyond e-commerce.

“We’re tapping into the lifestyle,” Brodie said. “Tory is such an intriguing person with such great style, and there’s so much opportunity to create content based on the collection and on her personal choices, from travel to entertaining to beauty.” A spokeswoman for Tory Burch confirmed the move.

Brodie’s exit comes soon after the promotion of Ariel Foxman to managing editor, though Brodie said there was no link. “This is more just about the opportunity that came to me,” she said. “I have wanted to go online for some time. That’s what drove my decision...[In Style] has been my home and I’m also thrilled for Ariel.”

Memo Pad: TEENS HAVE ONE LESS CHOICE
By Irin Carmon and Stephanie D. Smith

And then there were two: Hearst Magazines on Friday shuttered Cosmogirl magazine, the teen title it spun off from Cosmopolitan in 1999, with the December issue being the last. Many weren’t surprised to hear the news, given the title’s shrinking ad pages and flattening circulation, but were disappointed another magazine had exited from the teen market. In less than three years, Teen People, Elle Girl and Cosmogirl have folded, leaving Seventeen and Teen Vogue as the two stalwarts.

One of those disappointed was Cosmogirl’s founding editor Atoosa Rubenstein, who believed the magazine had gotten away from its roots as an alternative to its mainstream, high school sweetheart sister title Seventeen. “Cosmogirl was conceived as a magazine for edgy girls. This is a time for edgy ideas. It’s my belief that those girls will still be served, they’ll just be served in new, innovative ways other than a print publication,” she said. “I don’t think it’s the death of the girl, but the death of the magazine, and certainly the sign of the times.”

No longer involved with the magazine business after parting ways with Seventeen and having given birth two months ago to her own little girl, Angelika, “it’s like the closing of an era in my head.” Ironically, Rubenstein was said to be working on a teen-focused Internet project, Alpha Kitty, and a self-help book for teens, but shelved those projects to focus on her family.

Macrovision Sells TV Guide Magazine
By Jason Fell

Macrovision Monday announced the sale of TV Guide magazine to Beverly Hills, California-based investment firm OpenGate Capital. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. Macrovision says it identified TV Guide magazine as a business "not aligned with its core corporate strategy.”

“A primary goal of the Gemstar-TV Guide acquisition was the consolidation of key technology assets, including the interactive program guides, connected services and device connectivity needed to provide consumers with a uniquely simple digital home entertainment experience,” Macrovision president and CEO Fred Amoroso said in a statement. “The TV Guide magazine divestiture marks a significant milestone towards achieving this goal as the streamlined business model improves the company’s ability to execute its strategic plan.”

In April, Gemstar-TV Guide stockholders approved the company’s merger with Macrovision Corporation, the Santa Clara, California-based digital software solutions firm that agreed last December to acquire Gemstar for $2.8 billion in cash and stock. For now, TV Guide online remains with Macrovision.

Campaign Articles From Newsweek Become E-Books for Amazon Kindle
By Richard Perez-Pena
10/12/08
http://www.nytimes.com/2008/10/13/business/media/13newsweek.html?ref=media

It would seem to be a magazine’s dream in these straitened times: Take something you have already published and sold, repackage it and distribute it without all that expense of paper, ink and trucks, and then sell it again. This week, Newsweek will publish four books, one about each of the major presidential and vice presidential candidates — Senators John McCain, Barack Obama and Joseph Biden, and Gov. Sarah Palin — books that will not appear in print but will be available only as e-books from Amazon.com for download to Amazon’s Kindle device.

The books will contain versions of articles that Newsweek, owned by The Washington Post Company, has already published during the campaign. Turning this kind of collection into books is an old idea; what is new is to do it with such minimal production and distribution costs that even the most limited sales could be profitable. Amazon says this is probably the first such venture by a publication, but it is not likely to be the last.

“We think it’s a very interesting model that could broaden,” said Ian Freed, an Amazon vice president in charge of the Kindle reading device. “This could start to change the way at least some books are published.”
