******* It looks like TV Guide will be staying put in New York even though the magazine is going to be owned by a Beverly Hills venture-capital firm. Macrovision earlier this week said it was selling the magazine to OpenGate Capital, which specializes in buying under-funded companies at the bottom of the market. While the terms of the deal weren't disclosed, sources said OpenGate generally aims to do deals in the $100 million to $800 million range. MORE ONLINE

Tuesday afternoon we asked about rumored layoffs at Niche Media, publisher of socialite city magazines. From what we've heard since, it sounds like the bloodletting does, indeed, go well beyond Philadelphia Style and is in fact related to the Wall Street meltdown and advertising recession. "Top management is on it's way to Miami to repeat the same," one tipster writes. "Slash up the staff at Ocean Drive." Another writes, "There were more layoffs on Monday at [DC-based] Capitol File. The senior editor and two sales reps were let go." It should come as little surprise that plummeting real estate values and stock market contraction should sharply curb the number of people who think of themselves as affluent, and who thus read these sorts of magazines, particularly in recently fast-growing cities like Miami and DC. CEO Jason Binn made things worse by expanding to aggressively, one tipster claims: "It was always the plan, although not announced to the Philadelphia people when Niche bought Philadelphia Style, to have ALL the editorial content done in NYC. If the Philly staff believed their jobs were safe, it was wishful thinking." MORE ONLINE

Year-over-year magazine ad revenue page declines accelerated in the third quarter as the ongoing weakness in the economy led to declines across a broad swath of advertising categories. Rate-card-reported ad revenue for the third quarter dropped 8.8 percent over the year-ago quarter, with pages off 12.9 percent, per figures released Oct. 14 by Publishers Information Bureau, a service of Magazine Publishers of America. Categories showing steep revenue declines in the third quarter included the usual suspects of Automotive, which was down 23.9 percent; Drugs & Remedies, down 16.6 percent; and Home Furnishings & Supplies, off 8.4 percent. Also down, however, were categories that had earlier been among the few growth spots: Food & Food Products (off 18.4 percent), Retail (down 6.8 percent), Media & Advertising (down 4.1 percent), and Public Transportation, Hotels & Resorts (off 2.3 percent). Publishing companies all over are recasting their editorial vision (and organization). In recent weeks, b-to-b publishers Source and Nielsen and enthusiast publisher F+W have reorganized their edit staffs to revolve around market or community rather than channel (magazine versus Web site). The recent layoffs at Mansueto Ventures and the merging of its standalone online group into its print departments reflect the struggle even that company is going through in its approach to new media, despite its reputation (and success) as a leading edge publisher. Rolling Stone magazine is shrinking with the times. After more than four decades of standing out with a larger format than other magazines, it will step back and look like everyone else starting with the Oct. 30 issue, due out this week. The adoption of a standard format could boost single-copy sales and reduce production costs for advertising inserts such as scent strips and tear-out postcards. The magazine says any cost savings, though, will be offset by the inclusion of more pages and the shift to thicker, glossier paper. MORE ONLINE
6. Huffington Post
Vogue takes a bold political step with its November cover, headlining a feature on the Biden Women "All The Vice President's Women." The feature, which includes a beautiful spread of four generations of the women in Joe Biden's life (seen below), describes Jill Biden as "remarkable" and is based on the premise that, "If Senator Biden is elected, he'll bring along a close-knit family of strong, independent women." But while the article includes the conditional "if," the headline, and cover line, treat the Bidens as if the election is a done-deal and Jill has already started picking out the curtains for Number One Observatory Circle (the official Vice Presidential mansion).
