*** 1. NY Post TABLOID titan David Pecker is scouring the computers of American Media staffers in hopes of uncovering the disgruntled employee who has been sending regular e-mails to PAGE SIX bashing AMI editorial director Bonnie Fuller and exposing in-house secrets. The latest missive we received claims that "employees at AMI have been forced to turn over their computer passwords and laptops for inspection, and a private investigator named D.J. Barr has been hired to try and find the nasty mole." 2. NY Post Photographers are fuming at the strict new contracts Condé Nast is making them sign. "If you want to shoot for Condé Nast publications — any of them — you have to sign this contract that basically means you sign your life over," groused one lenser. According to several snappers, Condé Nast is offering three types of contracts. "One says they pay you basically nothing and own all the works thereafter," our source said. "The middle contract states they will pay you $50 if they resell your photo, and the top contract says they'll give you a bit more money for reselling. But the principle of them all is the same: they own you and your work.??? 3. NY Post As holiday shoppers struggle with the fine points of iPods and HDTVs, there's no better time to take a look at technology magazines to get a handle on what will confuse Americans during next year's shopping season. The December issue of Wired is about exploration — "the kind where you go places no one's gone before, then brag about it later... if you live," according to guest editor, Titanic director and self- proclaimed explorer James Cameron. (Yes, folks, he makes movies, deep-sea dives and holds a seat on the NASA Advisory Council.) After spending most of the "space age" grounded, Cameron believes we are on the brink of an exploration renaissance. One reason: private individuals, such as Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen, are starting to pick up the tab, rather than the U.S. government. This is, Cameron argues, a good thing, despite the challenges we face here on Earth. Apparently, he's not alone in his thinking. The magazine has plenty of writers-cum- adventurers making the same case for exploring
the ocean depths and traveling beyond the moon. They are especially eager for us to make a trip to the Red Planet, with one author furthering the notion that Mars could eventually become habitable for humans if we do enough "planet engineering." Earth to Cameron? *** Ed hears... ... that the beauty department of Harper's Bazaar is looking for spring interns. Duties include calling in products, opening mail and packages, maintaining the beauty closet and generally assisting the department. Applicants should be organized, hard-working, professional and enthusiastic about beauty. Interns should be able to work 2-3 days on Mondays, Thursdays or Fridays. The internship is unpaid, but the perks are great (all the lip gloss you can handle!). Please note: College credit is REQUIRED. If interested, please send a cover letter and resume as soon as possible to Alyssa Kolsky, Assistant Beauty Editor, at akolsky@hearst.com. Please be sure to include days you are available and whether or not you can receive credit. No phone calls please. (OK to mention Ed) *** Ed hears... ... that Budget Living magazine's fashion and home markets department is looking for some shopaholic obsessive types to help with fashion shoots and product research. Ideal candidates love design, are highly organized and can manage many tasks at once, not to mention an entire closet full of products. Perks include going to shoots. Please email resumes to nwarady@budgetlivingmedia.com or fax to 212-687-5222. (OK to mention Ed) Ed2010 ("ed twenty-ten") is a networking group for aspiring editors who want to reach their dream magazine jobs by the year 2010. Learn more about us at ed2010.com |
