Girl Mags Gone Winter Wild no writer December 6, 2004 http://www.nypost.com/business/35789.htm While the rest of us wait for Santa, the gal mags' January editions are ready to rock your winter world with a mix of real-woman articles and pretty-girl fluff ??” including, yikes, bikinis. Cosmo tempts with steamy cover lines that don't always live up to the stories inside. "Our best male body language secret ever" turns out to be pretty obvious stuff. But the interview with Kate Bosworth is full of interesting details, including how Bosworth landed her first acting job in the Horse Whisperer. For heavier fare, there's a good story on whether methods to extend a woman's fertility really work. Glamour's beauty issue offers lots of tips -some surprisingly fuss-free: lay off the nail. We're less inclined to applaud the model makeovers ??” they're pretty enough ??” and why men masturbate (do we really have to ask?) A better story is one on sexual slavery and what a crusading government official is doing to stop it. MORE ONLINE

BPA Worldwide, which audits circulation figures for most U.S. consumer magazines, has called for a major change in how magazines report "sponsored sales." Magazines are allowed to include in total circulation copies given away to readers but paid for by a marketer or business seeking to reach a particular audience. MORE ONLINE

Just in time for Christmas, America's two largest news magazines devote this week's cover stories to debunking the story of Jesus' birth. Among the conclusions in Time and Newsweek: Jesus was born in Nazareth, not Bethlehem; there is little evidence of three kings following a star, and the story of the virgin birth may have been borrowed. "The Nativity saga is neither fully fanciful nor fully factual but a layered narrative of early tradition and enduring theology," Newsweek writes in examining the Sunday-school version of the birth of Christ. Life magazine, one of the publishing's most venerable titles, may be on life support once again. The magazine was reintroduced Oct. 1, but by its second issue it was skimping by on only three ad pages. While the picture has improved slightly ??” the issue that was inserted into 70 newspapers nationally Friday had just over eight ad pages ??” industry observers think the reincarnation is bleeding red ink at an alarming rate.
