MPA Uses Marketing Mix to Vet Magazines??™ Place In Media Mix
By Michael Shields
12/8/04
http://www.mediapost.com/dtls_dsp_news.cfm?newsId=281990

A new study commissioned by the Magazine Publishers of America (MPA) provides compelling evidence in the ongoing campaign being waged by the magazine industry to prove its worth.

Magazines outperformed TV, radio, outdoor, and newspapers, each by a wide margin, in three different case studies culled together by media mix modeler The Hudson River Group.

Paragraph The MPA sought out the Hudson River Group, which works with various marketers to optimize their brands' return on investment (ROI), given their sizable database and the independent nature of their real-world client data.

Galottis??™s Big City Adventure
By Keith J. Kelly
Date 12/8/04

Ron Galotti, the high-living ex-Conde Nast publisher who chucked it all for the simple life, was back in the Big Apple this weekend with some of his new neighbors from North Pomfret, Vt. He brought the local fire chief, Bob Harrington, his wife Phyllis and their three adopted children with him.

"They had never been to New York," said Galotti, who showed his new friends everything from the Empire State Building, the China Grill, and Arthur Avenue in the Bronx.

Galotti brought the entourage to the Trump Tower for a personal visit with Donald Trump, star of books, real estate and "The Apprentice." It was their lucky day: The Donald happened to be meeting with another NBC star, Molly Sims, from the hit show "Las Vegas."

Kitty, Cut Loose and Put Out
By Richard Leiby
12/8/04

After a relationship of more than 30 years, Washingtonian magazine and writer Kitty Kelley are divorcing, and the terms are not amicable. Kelley is in a snit because the mag unceremoniously booted her from the masthead of its current issue, citing her controversial book "The Family: The Real Story of the Bush Dynasty." In an e-mail last week, Editor Jack Limpert lashed Kelley for what he called the book's partisan timing and its irresponsible reporting about President Bush:

Paragraph "We are always willing to attack the policies, and the behavior, of the President," Limpert wrote to Kelley. "But it seems to us that the office deserves respect. We don't think we should attack a President personally -- his relations with his wife and family, his use of alcohol or other drugs, things like that -- without a very solid basis for doing so. . . . We felt strongly enough that we didn't want readers to feel that your appearance on the masthead meant we endorsed the book."

Power Elves Party!

by Sara Vilkomerson
http://observer.com/pages/frontpage5.asp

It??™s the most wondrous time of the year ??¦ again! And what else truly heralds the start of the holiday season more than the highly anticipated office party? Where else can workplace terrors and ambition be seen so nakedly on display, tongues loosened by liquor and the sex that fizzles under the politically correct surface of the American workday allowed a measure of release??”the girl who wore that dress; the married segment producer who propositioned the sexually ambiguous P.A.; the assistant who did a dead-on, hilarious impression of his boss? And can anyone forget the thrill of recognition when Elaine danced at an office party on Seinfeld?
But there??™s something else that happens as well. It??™s the Santafreude quotient that happens here and nowhere else: Who??™s sitting where at the Cond?© Nast party lunch? Who??™s headed into the Times Magazine party, the City Hall party, the Vogue magazine party? Which Goldman Sachs party were you invited to? Did you get the party favor Bill O??™Reilly is giving out? Does yours run on two "D" batteries?
Who??™s going to be there? And why weren??™t we invited?
