It's Christmas bonus time in the land of lads, and the big man with the beard has a little something for all the good boys-and tolerant girls-who work in his glossy toy shop. With visions of next year's Dennis Publishing Christmas bonus bags stuffed with Stuff- and Maxim-branded food and vitamins, employees were treated to an altogether different sort of co-branding according to a tipster. Felix Dennis has given everyone... copies of his poetry book . We're sure these handsome volumes will delight the employees of The Strand, where they will be exchanged for store credit tomorrow. Jolly good!

Ole Anthony mentioned in this space yesterday that he'd been profiled in the current New Yorker . So reading that article was the first thing I did when I got home last night. You see, Joe Bob Briggs (aka John Bloom) did a wonderful profile of Anthony for us back in 1999. And I was delighted to see a reference to that piece early on in the NY article: "He was a con man and a hustler--with a great wardrobe," his best friend, John Bloom, better known as Joe Bob Briggs, a redneck comedian and movie critic, later wrote. "I liked him immediately." MORE ONLINE

Steve Shepard's imminent departure from the helm at BusinessWeek will mark the end of an era ??” what better time to check in and see how the business mags rate? Not content to simply invest in the usual stocks and bonds? This week Forbes offers up its annual collectors guide, which is chock full of investment ideas in the worlds of art and memorabilia. The package includes several articles, including a fascinating one on the artwork of the late Nirvana lead singer Kurt Cobain. Cobain's sketches and doodles are already fetching thousands, and several more items are expected to go on the auction block soon. Also check out the piece on Jim Halperin, who is the country's leading rare coin dealer but has a checkered past. Elsewhere, a business-oriented piece on the NBA and its image problems is worth reading, as is a look at organized crime's use of computer viruses. Fortune's cover piece on Google wonders if the Internet giant's valuation is out of whack, and largely comes to the conclusion that the company won't go the way of many dot-com busts of the past. A look at News Corp's plans for DirecTV reports the company is about to add all sorts of interactive features to the service, which for sports fans means they may soon be able to watch several games at once (News Corp. also owns The Post). Techies and gadget junkies should check out the mag's guide to the 25 best products of the year, including a TV that becomes a mirror when it's shut off and sunglasses with a built in MP3 player. For weeks, glossy celebrity-focused magazines have claimed that there was marital trouble between Jessica Simpson and her husband, Nick Lachey. And for weeks, the couple did not respond. But silence rarely proves golden in Hollywood, even when talking means rewarding one's detractors. "I said to Jessica's dad, 'Silence is keeping the story going because the reporting we have is one-sided,' " said Janice Min, editor in chief at Us Weekly. "I explained to him that nothing would be more powerful than hearing straight from Jessica." So Us Weekly, which had questioned the marriage itself several times in its pages, landed an exclusive interview and photo shoot with Ms. Simpson, Mr. Lachey and Ms. Simpson's father. The Dec. 13 issue featured a six-page story with the cover headline "We're Not Over!", contradicting Us Weekly's earlier reports. MORE ONLINE
