Washington Post Is Buying Slate.com
By DAVID CARR
http://nytimes.com/2004/12/21/business/22SLATEcnd.html?ei=5094&en=b66a12e09e2620b5&hp=&ex=1103691600&partner=homepage&pagewanted=print&position=

The Washington Post Company announced today that it is purchasing Slate, an online newsmagazine owned by Microsoft. The financial terms of the sale were not announced. Microsoft said in July that it was considering the sale of the pioneering media outlet, in part because the company believed that a Web magazine of cultural criticism and political analysis had little business salience in an age dominated by search applications and that the site's small size limited its ability to contribute meaningfully to Microsoft's revenues.

Donald E. Graham, chairman and chief executive officer of The Washington Post Company, said that Slate has been "a pioneer in internet publishing, and it is a fine magazine."

"Founder Michael Kinsley, editor Jacob Weisberg, and Microsoft deserve great credit for creating Slate. We couldn't be more enthusiastic about this acquisition," he said in a statement. Mr. Weisberg will remain editor of Slate.

"I couldn't be more excited about this move," Mr. Weisberg said. "Microsoft has been a wonderful home for us since 1996. It's clear, though, that The Washington Post Company is the best place for Slate to continue to grow and develop." MORE ONLINE

Future historians of American magazines will no doubt remember 2004 as the year when an armpit with feet became a major sex symbol.

The armpit starred in a series of advertisements for Axe deodorant that appeared in Rolling Stone, Maxim, Cargo and countless other mags. The Axe armpit is not what you'd call a classic matinee idol -- he has no head, no legs, a crop of hair and two chubby feet, each with three fat toes -- but the dude proved to be a major playa.

In one ad, the armpit enjoyed a candlelight dinner with a busty brunette who slipped off her shoe and played footsie with him under the table. In another ad, the armpit perched on a fluffy white rug in front of a blazing fireplace while a leggy blonde ran her fingers through his hair. In a third ad, the armpit canoodled with a wine-swilling babe on a gondola in Venice. MORE ONLINE
