Sarah Jewler, New York magazine's managing editor and a former managing editor at the Voice, died last night at 56. Jewler had been ill for some time with a rare blood disease that recently turned into leukemia, said New York spokeswoman Serena Torrey. Jewler had recently taken a leave of absence to prepare for a bone marrow transplant, and died in her sleep at the Tribeca home she shared with husband Jay Kennedy. A private memorial service for Jewler's family is being planned for this weekend on Long Island's North Shore, and New York plans a memorial event in the near future. MORE ONLINE

A leading African-American publisher has sounded a sour note over the pending sale of Essence Communications Partners, parent of black women's magazine Essence, to Time Warner. Earl Graves Sr., chairman of Black Enterprise magazine, issued a statement saying it was unfortunate "there wasn't an open bidding process." Black entrepreneurs "could have made an offer for the company and possibly preserve Essence as a black-owned business and institution," he added. MORE ONLINE

The richest man in New York City may be a little lighter in the pockets. S.I. Newhouse Jr.'s Advance Magazine group was stung by a $5.9 million embezzlement scheme. Shortly before Christmas, federal prosecutors charged credit-collection manager Josef J. Murphy who works in Advance's shared-services facility in Wilmington, Del., with interstate transfer of stolen property and froze 18 accounts in four banks. The facility houses back-shop credit and computer operations that handle Golf Digest, Parade and the glitzy Cond?© Nast titles that include Vanity Fair, Vogue, the New Yorker, GQ and Glamour.
