Man of da cloth

Is it wrong to think nasti-licious thoughts about a member of the clergy?
What?
No, no, Ed's just curious. He's a journalist, man.

You win, yo!

Congratulations to EdLover Lauren LeBlanc who was the first (of many!) to write in with the correct number of "yo"s in yesterday's newsletter (23)! Your naughty little prize is on its way, Lauren. Ed'll do another contest soon--this one probably about counting up typos.

New Circ Crisis At G + J
by KEITH J KELLY and HOLLY M SANDERS
Published: January 13, 2004

With a new circulation crisis rocking Gruner + Jahr USA, the embattled publisher of Family Circle, Parents and Inc. magazines claims that this time it was a victim of questionable practices by a circulation fulfillment house. The publisher said the new problems came to light as the result of an ongoing audit by the Audit Bureau of Circulations and forced the bureau to reclassify 165,000 names as "non-paid." As a result of the probe, G+J may miss the rate base on most of the magazines it published in 2004.

The company has filed a civil suit against the Florida firm, Publishers Communication Systems Inc., because G+J claims the firm had failed to provide auditors from the Audit Bureau of Circulations with documenation to prove that individual subscribers had actually paid for the magazines. Jane's got a new strategy and part of it is a new low price. Beginning with its February 2005 issue, the Fairchild-owned publication geared towards independent adult women - or so they say - will implement a new single-issue cover price of $1.99, down from its current price of $3.50.

"We had done a $1.99 price test with the re-launch of the September 2004 issue," said publisher Eva Dillon. "We realized that a lot of people will test a magazine like Jane at that price." Dillon went on to note that the magazine is 83 percent subscription based. "Because we're such a unique boutique magazine, what we decided was, with our new strategy, to test the market, and we had a really nice feedback." (more online)

Some of the magazines that Sarah Jewler worked on are gone, their staffs dispersed. They seemed to reunite in memory last week, when the managing editor of New York, Manhattan, inc. and The Village Voice, a vibrant, much-loved, indomitable blonde, died last week at 56.

"Interestingly, Sarah's job was to be a managing editor, but I didn't value her most for her ability to make the trains run on time," said Caroline Miller. The former editor in chief of New York magazine was recalling Jewler, who had served for 10 years as the magazine's managing editor. "Her role there, which was different from her title, was to be an ally and acute listener and sympathetic ear.
