Swimsuit Issue Offer: Invitation to Opt Out
Richard Sandomir

There are, it seems, subscribers who dislike Sports Illustrated's annual swimsuit issue. They do not want to see it and they certainly do not want it sent to them. They view the sensuous lounging of supermodels in expensive bikinis as alien to the mission of a weekly sports magazine.

The anti-swimsuit-issue backlash never developed into a mass movement of anti-bikinists burning the special winter edition in protest. But there have been letters, more in the past than now, saying that the pictorials objectify women.

And occasionally, there have been demonstrations outside the magazine's office building in Manhattan. But now the magazine is inviting subscribers to say "no thanks" to Veronica Varekova, Carolyn Murphy and other models, including the one who will be the winner of a new reality show, NBC's "Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Model Search."

Norm: I'm Not Going

RUMORS continue to fly fast and furious inside Time Inc. that Norm Pearlstine will step down from his editor-in-chief job and hand the reins to editorial director John Huey.

"I have a deputy in place in John Huey who is clearly positioned to succeed me," said Pearlstine recently, confirming what has long been suspected inside.

The big question is still - when. Pearlstine's contract doesn't run out for nearly two years, so observers looking for a power shift in the near term - say sometime after Pearlstine's ascension later this month into the Magazine Editors Hall of Fame - may be in for a long wait.

A BLISTERING new biography of Anna Wintour reveals the icy Vogue editrix once had an affair with reggae legend Bob Marley.

In "Front Row: The Cool Life and Hot Times of Vogue's Editor in Chief," due next month from St. Martin's, Jerry Oppenheimer recounts how in the late '70s, Wintour's pal, Island Records founder Chris Blackwell, introduced the fashionista to Marley and got her a backstage pass to one of Marley's shows in New York. She immediately "fell for" the pot-smoking musician

She was "riveted" and acted as if she'd "met God," one friend tells Oppenheimer, who reports she "virtually disappeared for a week" while notorious womanizer Marley was in town, spending all her time backstage.

Off the Record: Radar Magazine

Deet ??¦ deet ??¦ deet ??¦ DOOT! The long-virtual Radar magazine took another big step toward the actual this week, moving into new, permanent offices.

"Everything is in boxes now," editor Maer Roshan said on the phone Tuesday, as he awaited the moving truck. Three months ago, Mortimer Zuckerman and Jeffrey Epstein had finally flicked the switch for Mr. Roshan's on-again, off-again start-up to "on," reportedlyputtingupas much as $25 million for the near-dormant operation.

And now-after two months in temporary quarters with Hanft Unlimited on Hudson Street, plus a week's extra delay while the phone company got the lines straightened out-Radar was getting its own home. The offices are on the top floor, the 12th ("Radar's penthouse office," Mr. Roshan said) of 28 West 23rd Street, a short hop from The Observer's own new location. (Call it Half-Midtown!)
