"Plimpton??™s Big Shoes Are Vacant Yet Again"
By EDWARD WYATT

The Paris Review is searching again for a new editor, barely a year after appointing a replacement for George Plimpton, the only other person to fill the post in its five decades as one the nation's premier literary magazines.

Brigid Hughes, who succeeded Mr. Plimpton as the magazine's top editor last January, four months after his death, will leave The Review when her contract expires in March. Thomas H. Guinzburg, the president of the foundation that oversees the publication, said yesterday that the board had decided not to renew Ms. Hughes's contract. Neither he nor Ms. Hughes would specify the reasons for her departure.

The resignation is a stunning development for the quarterly, which current and former employees say is struggling to adapt to a formal management structure and to being overseen by a board of directors that, for the first time, is trying to influence its editorial direction.

Deet ??¦ deet ??¦ deet ??¦ DOOT! The long-virtual Radar magazine took another big step toward the actual this week, moving into new, permanent offices. Three months ago, Mortimer Zuckerman and Jeffrey Epstein had finally flicked the switch for Mr. Roshan??™s on-again, off-again start-up to "on," reportedlyputtingupas much as $25 million for the near-dormant operation.

Happy Inauguration Day!
******************

Or not. Still irate about the election of George W. Bush to a second term by those gloating Red Staters? Or maybe you ARE one of those gloating Red Staters! In an effort to make peace, magazine vets Deborah Baer (Ed HEARTS her!) and E.J. Boeke have unleashed two new books, "Blue v. Red: A Blue Stater's Guide to the Great State Debate" and "Red v. Blue: A Red Stater's Guide to the Great State Debate" (Andrews McMeel, January 2005). Snarky yet insightful, Baer and Boeke use these cultural buzz terms to mercilessly lampoon and expose the vulnerabilities, hypocrisies and sacred cow beliefs of both sides--making "Blue v. Red" and "Red v. Blue" essential guidebooks for anyone intrigued by America's increasingly bitter culture war. Pick up a copy today at your local Barnes & Noble, barnesandnoble.com or amazon.com.
