Mag Bonanza Over Breakup
By Keith J. Kelly

The four celebrity magazines that breathlessly covered the Jennifer Aniston/Brad Pitt bustup all hit the jackpot. Their gambles paid off. Usually when only two magazines share a similar image or theme, it is death to one - if not both.

This week, People, Us Weekly, Star and In Touch all reaped near record sales on the newsstand, defying conventional wisdom.

People, which rushed to get its issue to newsstands on Monday, Jan. 10 - days earlier than usual - had the strongest newsstand sales.

Teen girls' magazine world turns new page
By Lauren Bishop

Take a look at the girls' teen magazine section of any bookstore or newsstand, and you'll find the choices -- not to mention the neon colors and dazzlingly white smiles of today's teen idols -- dizzying.

Not that long ago, young women in the market for a teen magazine had few choices: Seventeen, Teen and YM. But things are changing. The market is now dominated by so-called "little sister" publications, namely Teen People (the first to debut, in 1998), CosmoGirl!, ElleGirl and Teen Vogue.

Now 60-year-old Seventeen is the last of the old-guard teen magazines on the newsstands. Because of declining circulation, YM ceased publication after its December-January issue, two years after Teen's demise.

GQ: ??Quien es Mas Marlon?
No writer
January 20, 2005

The new issue of GQ is out, and it features a profile of Javier Bardem headlined The Nuevo Brando (above, left).

GQ's awkward embrace of Spanglish aside, we can't think of a better heir to Marlon Brando's throne than Bardem, who has clearly spent a few months at the Armand Assante Clinic for Smoldering Intensity (to paraphrase Jon Stewart).

But, the thing is, wasn't Russell Crowe the next Marlon Brando? At least that's what we read back in 1999 in... GQ. They even said "We're not kidding," so they must've meant it.

Jesus is everywhere -- except pages of Rolling Stone
By Cathleen Falsani
January 21, 2005

Jann Wenner and his minions at Rolling Stone magazine can print -- or not print -- whatever their little hearts desire.

Therein lies the beauty and the blessing of a free press.

But while the powers that be at Mr. Wenner's venerable rock 'n' roll pop culture publication were well within their rights (legal or otherwise) when they refused to run a half-page advertisement for a new translation of the Bible, they also were thoroughly shortsighted.

Newsweek's Thomas: Modest reporter gets the scoop
By Jon Friedman
January 21, 2005
http://www.investors.com/breakingnews.asp?journalid=25064933&brk=1

When Evan Thomas, Newsweek assistant managing editor, checked his phone messages last Nov. 6, he didn't expect to hear John Kerry's voice.

But sure enough, there was the unmistakable Brahmin tone of the Massachusetts senator, fresh off his defeat to President Bush only four days earlier in the presidential election.

When Thomas called him back, Kerry got right down to business. He'd read Thomas' stories during the campaign and wanted to explain his view of what happened. They ultimately talked in Kerry's Boston home for 2 1/2 hours.
