Fortune Editor Kirkland Leaving

Rik Kirkland, a John Huey ally and Fortune veteran who spent 26 years at the magazine ??” including the last four as managing editor ??” is insisting that the move is voluntary and has been in the works since just after Christmas.

In a memo to staffers yesterday, he wrote, "Never one to bury the lead, here's the news: I am stepping down as managing editor of Fortune on April 1."

He said he discussed the move with Huey, the editorial director, and editor in chief Norman Pearlstine shortly after returning from holiday vacation.

Time Inc., the Manhattan-based publisher of Time, Sports Illustrated and People magazines, said it has stopped dealing with some independent agents hired to sell subscriptions because their practices are "too difficult to monitor," a company spokesman said yesterday.

Although the company declined to say how many subscriptions the new policy affects, it did say it is less than 2 percent of its total subscribers. Advertising Age, the trade magazine that reported Time Inc.'s new policy in yesterday's edition, said the company sells an estimated 35 million subscriptions, meaning the change would affect fewer than 700,000.
