******* FREE PIZZA! ******* Come stuff your face with Ed tonight in Williamsburg (just take the L train to Lorimer) at the Alligator Lounge, the only bar in New York City (and probably the whole darn country) that gives away an entire FREE HOMEMADE BRICK-OVEN PIZZA with EVERY drink purchase even just soda, if that's your pleasure (Ed didn't believe it either, but it's true, and very tasty!). See you between 7:00 and 9:00 p.m. ******* TAMPA! ******* Attention Tampa Edsters: It is time for another Ed2010 Happy Hour in the Bay area. Meet Ed at 7 p.m. at MacDinton's Irish Pub in Hyde Park in Tampa off of S. Howard Ave. Tell a friend and meet the group for some journalistic bonding. RSVP to tampabay@ed2010.com ******* News ******* 1. Washington Post When Covering Party People, Is Three a Crowd? By Richard Leiby 2/15/05 http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A24602-2005Feb14.html With three out-of-town magazine publishers swooping into Washington, hoping to cover hot nightlife, sexy fashionistas and actual celebrities, we have to ask: Are they sure they have the right city? "We understand that although it's red tie and blue tie during the day, Washingtonians unzip at night," DanaSpain-Smith, owner of the forthcoming Washington, D.C. Style, tells us. The slick bimonthly is modeled on her Philadelphia Style mag and will launch in May. "Right now there's not a publication in the market that caters to the fashionable set." Spain-Smith has taken an apartment in Washington and, after sampling the nightlife, declares: "Republicans can be fashionable, too. We don't care who you vote for as long as you have good shoes on when you do it." MORE ONLINE 2. New York Daily News Four Top Mags Take Circ Honors By Paul Colford 2/15/05 http://www.nydailynews.com/business/story/280877p-240725c.html The big circulation gainers last year were Lucky, Elle, Real Simple and In Touch Weekly, the juggernaut of celebrity weeklies. With Martha Stewart already counting down the days in a West Virginia prison, the circ of Martha Stewart Living was falling down by 20%, to 1.9 million. In numbers for the last six months of 2004, released yesterday by the Audit Bureau of Circulations, Elle stood out among fashion mags with a 24% increase in its average newsstand sale over the previous year and a 4.7% rise in total circ, to 1 million copies. MORE ONLINE 3. Media Daily News SI Annual Well-Suited for Print, Online, Digital, even Mobile Media By Wendy Davis 2/16/05 http://publications.mediapost.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=Articles.san&s=293133& Nid=12186&p=256602 THE WEB SITE FOR SPORTS Illustrated, SI.com, Tuesday posted 200 photos from its annual swimsuit issue--many for free. The site features enlargeable thumbnails of models and athletes in bathing suits (and, in at least one instance, a birthday suit), and allows visitors to enlarge many of the photos for free by clicking on them. Other photos, marked "exclusive," require subscriptions to enlarge; users who click on those are taken to a page where they can sign up to pay $4.95 for 13 issues, a free swimsuit-related DVD, and access to other content connected to the yearly bathing suit issue. In addition, SI.com is selling a digital edition of just the swimsuit issue for $5.99. Last month, SI.com made more articles available to paid subscribers as part of a redesign. This January, 4.9 million unique visitors went to the site--up from 3.9 million in January 2004, according to comScore Networks. MORE ONLINE 4. New York Daily News Pub Fares Leave Bad Taste By Lloyd Grove 2/16/05 http://www.nydailynews.com/front/story/281320p-241054c.html A few employees at Cond?© Nast's Times Square headquarters - whose fourth-floor cafeteria offers an "International Table" menu highlighting a designated foreign cuisine - were rolling their eyes yesterday. The International Table offering for Feb. 15? "African-American," said signs posted around the Frank Gehry-designed lunchroom, touting "Jamaican beef patties, shrimp jambalaya, rice, okra, corn, black-eyed pea stew, deviled eggs and biscuits." Admittedly, Si Newhouse's publishing empire - led by such slick monthlies as Vanity Fair, Vogue, Glamour and Gourmet, not to mention the weekly New Yorker - isn't famous for emphasizing people of color, either as profile subjects or subscribers.
