Suede Magazine Halted After 4 Issues
By THE NY TIMES STAFF
2/24/05
http://www.nytimes.com/2005/02/24/business/media/24suede.html

Essence Communications Partners announced yesterday that it was stopping publication, at least temporarily, of Suede, an ethnic fashion magazine aimed at young women, after four issues because of high production costs.

Essence owns the magazine jointly with Time Inc., which bought 49 percent of Essence in 2000 and announced in January that it had agreed to buy the remaining 51 percent. Time officials said yesterday that the deal was still on track.

"It has become clear that more time and resources would be needed to further develop this brand," Ed Lewis, chairman and chief executive officer of Essence Communications, said in a statement. He said the magazine was "going on hiatus," but other executives gave it less than a 50-50 chance of being revived. One said the title had failed to attract significant advertising interest. Only three issues of the magazine have been published; the April issue, the fourth, is at the printer now. The magazine was to become a monthly starting with this issue.

A legal challenge has thwarted a British publisher's choice of editors for new celebrity weekly OK!, but the company is still ramping up plans to launch later this year.

Northern & Shell is in serious talks toward a distribution deal for OK! with Comag Marketing Group, a joint venture of Conde Nast and Hearst that also distributes the rival Us Weekly.

Comag has already helped Northern & Shell present plans for OK! to magazine wholesalers and at least one key retailer - the giant Publix chain, which has 850 supermarkets in Florida and nearby states.

"Nice lips," we heard A CHIC WOMAN in her early 60's say to A GUY in his early 20's at the Los Angeles Confidential Magazine party for JAMIE FOXX on Tuesday night. "I know they're real because they're not even."

The young fellow was befuddled. "I've never heard that before," he said.

"Close your mouth," the woman said. "You have perfect lips."

Mags Plan $40M Ad Blitz
By Keith J. Kelly
2/23/05
http://www.nypost.com/business/41053.htm

WE'VE heard the mantra for decades now, print is dead, newspapers and magazines are in peril. Now the Magazine Publishers of America, in an aggressive bid to put the industry's best foot forward, is kicking off a massive $40 million, three-year ad campaign.

One of its basic premises is that ??” unlike most commercials on TV and the annoying pop up ads on the Internet ??” consumers identify with and enjoy magazines ??” and that extends right down to the ads.

"I think everyone realized that the magazine industry has been lacking in a uniform voice about what is right with us," said Jack Kliger, CEO of Hachette Filipacchi Media and vice chairman of the MPA.

Martha??™s Homecoming
By CNN/Money
2/22/05
http://money.cnn.com/2005/02/22/news/newsmakers/martha_return/index.htm

Not long ago, Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia seemed eager to put as much distance as possible between itself and its famous founder.

After Martha Stewart's conviction a year ago for obstructing justice and lying to investigators, the New York-based company cancelled her columns, downplayed her name in its flagship magazine, and actively promoted a new crop of lifestyle experts in the hopes of stemming mounting losses.

Now, with Stewart, 63, due to be released from prison next week and having undergone an image makeover that surprised critics, Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia (down $0.39 to $34.60, Research) is reaching out to its namesake with open arms. In the March issue of Martha Stewart Living and on the company Web site, editor-in-chief Margaret Roach says Stewart will begin penning a new column for the magazine starting in April.
