******
EDgy
******
Ed is on the verge of having a very pissy day. His hamstrings are really sore, it's hella windy and cold outside, and the commute sucked (why do people on the train insist on, like, breathing and standing there and stuff? GAWD). He's in need of some Jamiroquai--and EdLove--stat! (OK, that was this morning, now it??™s almost 10 p.m. and he did indeed have that pissy day of his! Which is why the news is so late. Bah.)

*******
News
*******
1. New York Times
Martha Stewart Gets New Body in Magazine
By JONATHAN D. GLATER
3/3/05
http://www.nytimes.com/2005/03/03/business/media/03mag.html

Martha Stewart's name may be enough to sell magazines, but Newsweek magazine apparently does not think her body is.

On its cover this week, Newsweek features what appears to be a photo of Ms. Stewart but is actually an image combining a photo of her face and one of a model's body. The idea, an editor at the magazine said, was to portray Ms. Stewart as she may appear when she emerges from prison in a few days - slimmer and stronger than ever.

"The piece that we commissioned was intended to show Martha as she would be, not necessarily as she is," said Lynn Staley, assistant managing editor at Newsweek.

MORE ONLINE

2. Gawker
Learning About the Media With Wikipedia
By JESS COEN
3/3/05
http://www.gawker.com/news/media/commentary/index.php#learning-about-the-media-with-wikipedia-034798

Online community encyclopedia Wikipedia is nothing new, but because you can add any entry to the database or alter any information that appears in an existing entry (thus making it an unwise source for any would-be journos out there), it??™s a wonderful measure of who ???the people??? really care to know about and what, exactly, is worth knowing:.

Kurt Andersen ??“ ???Writes extensively on media.??? Tina Brown ??“ Dated Dudley Moore Matt Drudge ??“ An entry so long, we suspect he wrote it himself. Paris Hilton - ???Recent attempts to start a modeling company and a makeup line seem to have been unsuccessful.??? Bill Keller ??“ Birthday is June 18, 1949. Save the date! David Remnick ??“ ???Those who have dined with him say he is surprisingly foul-mouthed.???

And, sadly, not making the Wikipedia cut:

MORE ONLINE

3. The New York Observer
Off The Record (Cargo Magazine)
By GABRIEL SHERMAN
3/3/05
http://www.observer.com/pages/offtherec.asp
Some leading shopping experts had to miss out on last month??™s Presidents??™ Day specials: While New Yorkers enjoyed the three-day weekend, part of the staff at Cond?© Nast??™s Cargo spent the holiday inside 4 Times Square, putting in extra hours on a revamp of the men??™s shopping magazine.

"It is not common for staff to work on weekends," Cargo spokesperson Mistrella Murphy said. "From time to time, as with the May issue, it is necessary for some staff to work extra hours to meet the closing schedule."

Though the changes may have been time-consuming, editor in chief Ariel Foxman said they fell short of an outright redesign. "I consider us still in our launch mode," Mr. Foxman said. "[Cargo] has been evolving in terms of balance, in terms of depth of coverage, and in terms of breadth of coverage. We??™ve sort of been tinkering with that all along."

MORE ONLINE

************
Whisper Jobs
************
Ed hears??¦

... that Elements of Living, a high end source magazine for designers and consumers passionate about design, is hiring an executive editor.
