With only weeks remaining before the National Enquirer is expected to relocate to New York City from Boca Raton, Fla., new Editor-in-Chief Paul Field has sent an urgent chain e-mail to London seeking help from his fellow countrymen.

"Greetings from New York - and a shameless request for help," said the blanket e-mail that Field sent out around 1 a.m. Feb. 28.

Some speculate there have been problems with staffing and the redesign, which the company adamantly denies. Field wrote: "You may have seen stories in the trade press about a British invasion at the best-known American tabloid and a Fleet Street brain drain.

Say this for Sports Illustrated, the Time Warner property: It has style. Normally, when a company does something as relatively mundane as tinkering with its name, the event can be as exciting and newsworthy as watching paint dry.

But when the magazine proclaimed Monday night that it preferred to be known by the somewhat snappier handle of "SI" (which is what everyone has called the publication since it debuted 50 years ago, anyway), it had the spark to invite the Most Famous Man in the World and enliven the festivities. I'm talking about Muhammad Ali, of course.

There aren't many people who can reduce hard-core sports business executives (not to mention one MarketWatch media columnist who was there, too) to act like star-struck kids. The Greatest posed for pictures and good-naturedly threw jabs at the delighted throng.
