******* 1. The Wall Street Journal When Jennifer Beck moved to New York City from Sunrise, Fla., in August, she didn't have a job. But she had a plan. Read Ed2010's newsletter every day. A group for magazine editors, Ed2010 sends out a daily e-mail that features buzz about the goings-on in the magazine world, along with dozens of job and internship openings -- many of them unofficial "whispers," as the letter calls them, that aren't posted anywhere else. Magazine editors and those looking to break into the industry can sign up to get Ed's daily news and peruse recent job listings free at ed2010.com. By mid-September, Ms. Beck, then 22 years old, scored an internship at Tango magazine, thanks to an Ed tip. Now, she is freelancing for Popular Mechanics, after following up on another Ed posting.Though industry-focused e-mail newsletters and Web sites with job listings have been around for years, they are increasing in popularity as online job searching expands. Some niche sites, such as Ed2010 -- which started with a circulation of just 30 seven years ago and now has about 4,000 subscribers -- are free and maintained by volunteers. Others are run by professional organizations, like the Association for Women in Mathematics, or by various businesses. World Air Data, for example, has published Air Jobs Digest, an aviation-and-aerospace-industry employment newsletter for 30 years and several years ago launched AirJobsDaily.com. The online site updates job postings daily and costs $29.95 for an annual subscription. While industry sites and newsletters don't necessarily replace general online job sites, they can supplement a search. Hey Martha, Your Slip is Showing By Keith J. Kelley 3/15/05 http://www.nypost.com/php/pfriendly/pfriendly_new.php Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia is predicting a second-quarter ad revival for its flagship magazine, but it will have a lot of ground to make up. During the first two months of 2005, Martha's mag got the equivalent of a prison beating from rival Real Simple. The ad figures for the first two months of the year, released last week by the Publishers Information Bureau, show Martha Stewart Living was down 23.1 percent in ad pages to 81.8 pages for the January/February period compared to a year ago and down 18.1 percent in ad revenue to $9.4 million compared to a year ago. The Believer sounds like the name of a religious magazine but it isn't. The Believer is a literary magazine. Or maybe not. Can you be a literary magazine if you run an article about a convention of people who collect '70s-era Mego action figure dolls and you tout the story with the cover line "Adorable Flaws, Goofy Charm, and Soft, Rubbery Heads"? The Believer reviews books, which is certainly literary, but it also reviews motels and animals and hand tools, such as the Ace Heavy-Duty Glue Gun, which doesn't sound very literary at all. The magazine is published 10 times a year in San Francisco by a gaggle of young editors who explain their brainchild in a cryptic statement on their Web site: "We will focus on writers and books we like. We will give people and books the benefit of the doubt. The working title of this magazine was The Optimist." MORE ONLINE 4. NY PostMags Lack Sticker Shock 3/14/05 http://www.nypost.com/php/pfriendly/pfriendly_new.php With spring's arrival just around the corner, men and women are naturally thinking about love ??” the love of shopping, that is. And who doesn't need a new spring wardrobe? To help you navigate the deals and the steals, newsstand takes a look at some of the shopping magazines currently for sale. Vitals bills itself as the men's magazine about life's great necessities. For whom a $28,000 crocodile skin attache, a $947 cheese bowl or a $550 Marc Jacobs-designed surfboard would be a necessity is another question altogether. The mag, as usual, is heavy on the big-ticket stuff ??” which women have been force fed for decades. This issue chats with hip-hop mogul Damon Dash about his Muhammad Ali memorabilia collection and with actor Adrian Brody about his music. Some of the issue actually has things we could learn and use, like what belongs in a good closet. But as usual, the mag gets lost in telling us we should stock up on hangers that cost $180 a dozen. For the more sensitive males, there's a nice feature on floral arrangements and how to keep them looking fresh as, well, a daisy. For men genuinely disinterested in any functional relationship with a female, April's Cargo magazine has plenty for you. First, there's a little self-helper on where to buy padded underwear that will make any guy look more, ahem, impressive. If that old trick ropes you a filly, though, be warned that she'll surely bolt from the barn when you start using the facial masks featured later on in the mag. Didn't we used to be men? The editors redeem themselves, however, with a good spread on how well- tailored suits, pants and shirts fit and another on how to match shirts and ties in these crazy, pastel- striped times. Now, that's the kind of stuff guys like to read while they're sit ting around waiting for their toenail polish to dry. MORE ONLINE
