Kelly 2/25/05 http://www.nypost.com/business/41199.htm IN Touch may be surging on the circulation front, but its staff seems to be fleeing in droves. NY TimesNew Yorker Again Dominates Magazine Award Nominations By Katharine Q. Seelye 3/18/05 http://www.nytimes.com/2005/03/18/business/media/18mags.html? For the eighth year in a row, The New Yorker dominated the nominations for the National Magazine Awards, which were announced yesterday. The weekly New Yorker received 10 nominations in 9 categories in the 40th annual award lineup. The categories include best magazine for general excellence among magazines with a circulation of one million to two million, and best of the public interest category for three articles by Seymour M. Hersh last May, including one on the Abu Ghraib prison scandal. Vanity Fair, after a drought last year, received the next highest number of nominations, seven, and is competing against The New Yorker in the general excellence category. Vanity Fair had been nominated for general excellence every year since 1997, except for 2004, and last won in the category in 1999. MORE ONLINE 4. NY TimesNew Editor of Paris Review Is Writer for The New Yorker By Edward Wyatt 3/18/05 http://www.nytimes.com/2005/03/18/nyregion/18paris.html Philip Gourevitch, a staff writer for The New Yorker magazine and the author of an acclaimed account of the effects of the 1994 massacres in Rwanda, was appointed yesterday as editor of The Paris Review, the esteemed literary quarterly that for decades was edited by George Plimpton. The appointment opens a new chapter for the magazine, which has a circulation of about 10,000. Since Mr. Plimpton died in September 2003, the Review has suffered internal turmoil and dissension among its staff and board members of the foundation that oversees it. Two months ago, the board decided not to renew the contract of Brigid Hughes, who had succeeded Mr. Plimpton as the magazine's top editor in January 2004. At the time, board members said that they wanted a better-known literary figure at the helm, someone who could raise The Paris Review's profile by attracting new writers as well as supporters who could contribute to its financial success. Ms. Hughes's contract expires this month. MORE ONLINE 5.
