To caf, or not to caf?

Das ist der Frage. Ed has probably taken in around 160 milligrams of caffeine today. That's not much--however, considering that he's only had eight ounces of water, and that he has a headache that is most likely being caused by dehydration, and that the soymilk he'll order in his latte will tack on 100 calories to his daily total, perhaps he should just stick to Poland Spring.

Photo Prank on Bush Twins

As an April fool's joke, Maxim is taking on the Bush twins.

The April issue of the men's magazine, which hit newsstands Tuesday, has a photo illustration of Jenna and Barbara Bush, plumage in the air and sporting lingerie in what is meant to be the aftermath of a pillow fight.

"Born November 25, 1981, this Texas twosome burst into the public eye and our dirtiest dreams ??” right after Daddy moved into the Oval Office," reads the first paragraph.

G + J Mulls Lower Priced Mag

Seeking to rebound from a high-profile fight with former talk-show host Rosie O'Donnell and a subsequent circulation scandal, Gruner + Jahr USA Publishing is considering whether to launch a low-price magazine for women that would be sold primarily at newsstands, according to its top executive.

J. Russell Denson, who joined G+J in May, said yesterday the company is eyeing the market for weekly and monthly periodicals priced around $2 and, in some cases, sold exclusively at Wal-Mart. "There are a number of titles out there for women, but I think there are a couple of niches," he said. "And we're working to see if we can do something in those niches."

Denson replaced the chief executive who was fired after G+J's dispute with O'Donnell - the inspiration behind the now-defunct Rosie magazine.

We hear that the following letter was just messengered over from Dennis Publishing president & CEO Stephen Colvin to WWD editor James Fallon with copies sent to CEO Mary Berner and chairman Patrick McCarthy as well.

Dear Mr. Fallon: Jeff Bercovici's March 4th article on the men's lifestyle magazine category is another chapter in what is apparently his journalistic vendetta against Dennis Publishing, Inc.

In December, citing unnamed ex-employees, Bercovici wrongly reported that Stuff magazine was for sale. In fact, I told Bercovici a few days earlier in a telephone interview that it was absolutely untrue. Two weeks later, when it was painfully clear that there were no reputable sources or evidence for the story, Bercovici issued a retraction.
