When Will Tina Brown Blog? Scoop: Real Soon.
By Greg Lindsay
3/29/05
http://www.business2.com/b2/web/articles/0,17863,1043211,00.html

During the weblog's transition from a variation of a personal homepage to a rival to the reporting and commentary of the mainstream media (MSM) -- and occasional assassin of the media's kings -- I've been keeping an eye open for the announcement that would signal blogging's entry into the mainstream and the end of its subversive, outsider reputation. As a canary-in-the-coal-mine sign, Tina Brown is the perfect bird. The British-born editor is the consummate MSM insider, who, just as the dotcom boom was peaking, was pouring her media-mogul hopes and dreams into Talk magazine. (Remember that it had the preliminary subtitle of "The American Conversation," a mantle snatched away with gusto by the collective inhabitants of the blogosphere.)

The blogosphere seemed safe enough. These days Brown is busy with her cable-TV show, her Washington Post column, and the research for her seven-figure bio of Princess Diana. After a St. Patrick's Day rant in her column in which she point-blank declared that snoopy bloggers "are the new Stasi," I figured blogging would remain the hole-in-the-wall haven for journalistic outlaws.

But my sense of security was short-lived. Starting next month Brown is crashing the bloggers' party, as Arianna Huffington's guest. Huffington, the conservative-turned-liberal author, pundit, California gubernatorial candidate, and bona fide blogger, is adding "media entrepreneur" to her list of titles with a new online publishing venture, the Huffington Report.

2004 Best-/Worst-Selling Covers
By Steve Cohn
3/28/05
http://www.minonline.com/topstory.htm

Legacy of the late 19th-century British scientist Charles Darwin, whose "theory of evolution" overcame one major challenge in the 20th century--the 1925 Scopes Trial--apparently will have a tough go in the 21st. Rise in religious fundamentalism (in all faiths) has been accompanied by the growing support of teaching creationism in the schools. That, of course, was not the crux of National Geographic asking Was Darwin Wrong? last November. As it has been in NG since its launch in 1888 (six years after Darwin's death), the arguments over evolution were purely scientific. But the controversy helped make this plain-looking cover (right) NG's best-selling for 2004.

"Fittest" applies every month to Men's Health and Men's Fitness. A bit less, though, also last November, as their hunks fared worst. Solace for MH senior vp/editor-in-chief Dave Zinczenko is that the issue is part of the magazine's National Magazine Award-nominated "General Excellence" (1 million circ) package. Ditto the November 2004 NG (2 million-plus circ) for retired editor-in-chief Bill Allen.

Pre-2004, Jude Law was the more famous of the two British actors, with 2003's Cold Mountain helping him establish U.S. stardom. Superstardom for Orlando Bloom came from his Legolas Greenleaf character in The Fellowship of the King, the last in The Lord of the Rings trilogy. Hit film was in theaters when the January 2004 Gentlemen's Quarterly Bloom cover was released, and it proved to be GQ's best-seller. Four months and 11 Fellowship of the King Oscars later (led by "Best Picture" and "Best Director"), Bloom scored a best-selling double with Premiere showcasing his "Paris" role in Troy.

Harper's plans clarification of altered photo of Florida Marine
By AP

PINCH, W.Va. -- Harper's Magazine says it plans to run a clarification after receiving complaints about a photo illustration of several Marines, including one from West Virginia, that appears on the cover of the March issue with a headline promoting an article about deserters

None of the Marines was identified. The image of Pvt. Britian Kinder, 19, of Pinch, was altered to make him appear as a blurry, ghostly figure. But Kinder's father Mickey said he recognized his son, who is stationed in Pensacola, Fla.

``He's quite upset, angry,'' the elder Kinder said. ``He's a smart boy, a good Christian boy proud to be a Marine. It doesn't say his name specifically in it, but by glancing at it, you'd think he'd gone AWOL. I worry someone would see him out in public and go, 'Look, there's that boy who went AWOL.'''

Make a Wish: The do-it-yourself magazine for techie dreamers
By Paul Boutin
3/29/05
http://slate.msn.com/id/2115922/

This weekend, I learned how to build an aerial photography rig out of a disposable camera and a kite. Klutz that I am, I didn't get very far before figuring out that today's power drills will bore into your antique oak dining room table if you hit the wrong button. But I also learned how to braid fishing line into a sturdy suspension cable, how to make a time-delay shutter lever out of Silly Putty, and the proper technique for gluing Popsicle sticks to each other rather than to my fingers. Did you know that Popsicle sticks come in standardized sizes for crafts?

I pulled my DIY weekend from the pages of Make, a new quarterly magazine for techie tinkerers. The premiere issue, which costs $14.95 and is available at most chain bookstores, CompUSA, or by subscription, has 192 pages worth of projects: backyard monorails, tricked-out PDAs, and Pong games that replace the video screen with two mechanical paddles and a real ball. Most of these real-world hardware hacks come with photos and step-by-step instructions so you can try them yourself. Some of the projects, like the trick five-in-one network cable, are practical tools for geeks. Others, like the tips on how to disguise your Jeep as a corporate fleet truck so you can get free parking downtown, are clever pranks you'll wish you thought of first.

Make is the latest project off the O'Reilly assembly line. The techie publishers are revered for their attention to detail, accuracy, and readability-since this is an O'Reilly publication, it's a safe bet the instructions will work. The magazine's goofy prankster streak, though, bears the touch of editor in chief Mark Frauenfelder, the playfully nerdy mind behind Boing Boing. You'd expect an O'Reilly publication to exhaustively document the parts you need to build a park-anywhere urban truck. It's totally Frauenfelder to add that a laminated "Funeral" sign for your windshield works best if used sparingly.
