******* Elizabeth Crow, a veteran magazine editor who held several prestigious executive positions in publishing, including CEO of G+J USA Publishing, died on April 4 after brief battle with esophageal cancer. She was 58. Crow was most recently vp, editorial director of Consumers Union, publisher of Consumer Reports and other special-interest titles. Prior to joining Consumer Reports in March 2004, Crow was editorial director of Primedia's consumer magazine division, and before Primedia she was vp and editorial director of Rodale's Women's Health Group, where she oversaw Prevention, a number of Web sites and Rodale Books. MORE ONLINE 2. The New York ObserverOff the Record By Tom Scocca 4/06/05 http://observer.com/pages/offtherec.asp One week before the launch of Domino, Cond?© Nast's decorating magazine, 41-year-old editor in chief Deborah Needleman was speaking on the phone about her own interior-design predilections, as applied to the Tribeca loft she shares with her husband, Slate editor Jacob Weisberg. Already, Ms. Needleman said, her magazine had helped the couple to solve a decorating conundrum. We're doing a lacquering story in the premiere issue, and we just lacquered this enormous bookshelf that had been a giant albatross in our apartment since we moved in," Ms. Needleman said. "Now it's receded into the white walls. Before, it looked like this hulking mass that was about to fall on top of you." Putting a do-it-yourself gloss on home design is what S.I. Newhouse hired Ms. Needleman for. Domino is the newest version of Cond?© Nast's thriving magalog concept-treating house decorating the way Lucky treats fashion, as an opportunity for shopping. Ms. Needleman comes to the job from Cond?© Nast's more conventional house magazine House and Garden, where she was an editor at large. These days, she said, a whole flock of readers-cum-consumers now forage for housing and d?©cor the way Lucky's million-plus readership snaps up each season's trends. MORE ONLINE 3. Chicaco Sun-TimesVanity Fair covers 'Housewives' Feud By Cindy Pearlman 4/06/05 http://www.suntimes.com/output/entertainment/cst-ftr-desperate06.htmlp> It almost sounds like a B movie. Call it "Housewives in Hell." That sums up reports of a recent Vanity Fair cover shoot with the red-hot stars of ABC's hit TV series "Desperate Housewives." The good news: The "Desperate Housewives" didn't resort to hurling Comet and dirty mops at each other. The bad news: The shoot seems to confirm rumors that everything is not always wistful on old Wisteria Lane. Reportedly at the Vanity Fair shoot, Marcia Cross became quite cross when Golden Globe winner Teri Hatcher was given A-list treatment over the other actresses. Vanity Fair writer Ned Zeman, who was on the set of the photo shoot as an observer, has reported that Cross "lost it" when Teri was positioned in the middle of the group. This was in spite of a request by publicists that the housewives be given equal treatment under the lens and Teri was not to be the center of the photos. MORE ONLINE 4. Media LifeYet another flush of magazine launches By Lorraine Sanders 4/06/05 http://www.medialifemagazine.com/News2005/april05/apr04/3_wed/news5wednesday.html This is a good year for magazines and about to get better, with ad pages up 2.6 percent through February and forecasters anticipating magazine revenues rising at an even faster pace through the year, by 6 percent or higher. All this leads to yet more launch announcements, in addition to those released at the beginning of the year. This in fact could be a record year for launches, outpacing even the boom years of the late 1990s. It's certainly headed that way. This latest round of new titles skews to special interest and regional titles, notably car titles, women's service and luxury city magazines. Out of Hachette Filipacchi come two new titles for car enthusiasts, Road & Track Gear and Road & Track SPEED. On stands now with its April/May issue, Gear is targeted at the car enthusiast who wants to know about products and trends in in-car audio and video, navigation systems and other car toys. MORE ONLINE 5. The New York ObserverA Friend Writes: ???Who is running The New Yorker???? By Tom Scocca 4/06/05 http://observer.com/pages/observatory.asp Officially, there is no such thing asThe New Yorker masthead. The New Yorker is so averse to having a masthead that The New Yorker will not even comment about why it chooses not to have a masthead. As a result, the people who make the magazine have spent generations veiled by the fictitious persona of mascot Eustace Tilley-and the quasi-fictitious non-personae of the legendary editors, Mr. Ross and Mr. Shawn. They emerge from the shadows only for obituaries. The writers at least have bylines-and since the editorship of Tina Brown, some have also had their professional credentials briefly sketched on a weekly contributors' page. But above them in the editors' offices, and below them in the research and fact-checking realms, anonymity reigns. MORE ONLINE
