******* Maxim magazine is working overtime to be Hollywood-friendly. Lad mag, which boasts a paid circulation of more than 2_ million, has in recent weeks hammered out deals with Dimension Films and NBC that go beyond the usual cover story horse-trading. In the case of the Peacock, an episode of NBC's "Las Vegas" airing next month will feature scenes from Maxim's annual Hot 100 party. Not so coincidentally, series star Vanessa Marcil will be Maxim's covergirl in June. MORE ONLINE 2. Gawker'Life & Style' Baits 'Us' Staffers With Promises Of Wealth, Grandeur By Gawker staff 4/8/05 http://www.gawker.com/news/media/us-weekly/index.php#life-style-baits-us-staffers-with-promises-of-wealth-grandeur-039053 You can't make this shit up. And by ???this shit,??? we mean the recruiting tactics of Life & Style magazine - you know, that one celebrity weekly you use to line the litter box. It's come to our attention that the ambitious L&S HR folks are going down the Us Weekly masthead, cold calling staffers and offering them jobs. With the exception of Ingela Ratledge (we think?), all have demurred, citing reasons as varied as contentment with their current job (heh) to simply not wanting to commute to the L&S offices across the Hudson. The commute excuse, it would seem, lays the groundwork for the L&S HR to drop their final selling point, which goes roughly like this: ???We'll pay you so much, you can buy a car.??? TEMPTING! But really, a shiny new Kia isn't going to make Jersey - or Life & Style, for that matter - any more palatable. MORE ONLINE 3. NY Daily NewsPope coverage revs mags' sales By Paul D. Colford 4/8/05 http://www.nydailynews.com/business/story/297678p-254875c.html The death of the Pope kicked Jane Fonda and her book "My Life So Far" off the cover of Time. Newsweek said it's on track to sell at least 50% more copies than last year's top draw - a commemorative issue on Ronald Reagan. The three newsweeklies have printed thousands more copies than usual of their issues this week to meet expected demand for cover stories on the Pope. MORE ONLINE 4. NY PostPublisher Goes Off Radar By Keith J. Kelly 4/8/05 http://www.nypost.com/business/42278.htm Rumors were swirling that Radar magazine - which is slated for May 24 - is going into the final weeks before its launch with an absentee publisher. The Maer Roshan-edited magazine is said to be getting up to $25 million in backing from Daily News owner Mort Zuckerman. Zuckerman had installed Linda Sepp as publisher, but in recent weeks sources said he has pushed U.S. News & World Report President William Holiber into the trenches to help sell ads for Radar. Sepp had earlier been the publisher of Fast Company in its glory days when Zuckerman still owned it and the magazine was overflowing with ads. MORE ONLINE 5. FolioDwell's House Gets Black By Dylan Stableford 4/7/05 http://www.foliomag.com/index.php?id=396&backPID=392&tt_news=676 Dwell, the 5-year-old San Francisco-based independent shelter title for the design-savvy, announced last week that it had reached profitability with the April issue, which generated $1.6 million in revenue. The 220,000 circulation, bimonthly magazine will go to nine issues next year and increase its ratebase to 250,000 in February 2006. ???By no means do we think we have arrived,??? says Dwell president and publisher Michela O'Connor Abrams. ???But it's nice.??? O'Connor Abrams, who was hired in 2002, says she wanted to accelerate the path to profitability through increased investment in the newsstand and brand awareness, as well as reducing costs in other areas.
