******* THE crowd at the National Magazine Awards buzzed with surprise yesterday when Martha Stewart Weddings won an award for the first time, besting rivals like The Atlantic Monthly and the revamped New York magazine. But the ballroom burst into applause, and a few cheers, when Ms. Stewart herself emerged to accept the honor. "We are celebrating our 10th anniversary," Ms. Stewart said from the stage. "What a great anniversary this is." Ms. Stewart might have noted that 2005 is proving to be a great year for her all around, as opposed to 2004, when she was jailed on charges of lying to investigators about a stock trade. She was released last month to begin five months of home confinement, with exceptions for work-related events and other activities. . . .But the big victor of the day was The New Yorker, which won the most awards - five - including the prize for general excellence among magazines with circulations of one million to two million. It also won in reporting, for an article by Samantha Power, "Dying in Darfur"; in profile writing, for an article by Ian Parker about a man determined to donate his kidney; in reviews and criticism, for three articles by Adam Gopnik on subjects including Times Square; and in public interest, for three articles by Seymour M. Hersh, including "Torture at Abu Ghraib.". . . But perhaps the biggest surprise came when the final and most prominent award, for general excellence among magazines with circulations above two million, went to Glamour. No women's magazine has won for general excellence since Mirabella in 1992. "We have an awful lot of fun putting this magazine together," said Cynthia Leive, Glamour's editor in chief. "This makes it seem a little more like work." MORE ONLINE

The beaming countenance of Martha Stewart was one of the enduring images of this year's National Magazine Awards ceremony at Manhattan's Waldorf-Astoria today. Ms. Stewart, who was released from federal prison last month, unexpectedly took the stage when her Martha Stewart Weddings magazine won general excellence for magazines with circulation between 250,000 and 500,000. Later in the ceremony, Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia's Kids: Fun Stuff to Do Together (formerly known as Martha Stewart Kids) won best design. "How does it feel to win two fabulous, coveted awards? Excellent," a grinning Ms. Stewart told Adage.com after she exited the stage following a final winners-only photo op. (Gawkers noted that the electronic monitoring bracelet Ms. Stewart must wear was not visible between her trousers and open-toed shoes.) MORE ONLINE

Web hosting company Hostway this week released the results of its poll of 2,500 Americans on blogging. Eighty percent of respondents did not believe that bloggers should be allowed to publish home addresses and other personal information about private citizens. A further 72 percent favored censorship of personal information about celebrities, and 68 percent, information about elected or appointed government officials such as judges or mayors. However, more than one-third of respondents had never heard of blogs before participating in the survey, and only around 30 percent of participants had actually visited a blog themselves. MORE ONLINE

Pop tart Britney Spears is preggers, people, and it could not have come at a happier time -- for the celebrity press and for the young diva's career. "Pregnancy is the granddaddy of them all," says Ken Baker, West Coast editor of US Weekly. There was a time when becoming ripe with child might push a celebrity out of the limelight for a spell. Not now. Star mommies sell. They're huge (especially if they get huge; Remember when Kate Hudson put on 60 pounds?). Look no further than Julia Roberts and the twins. MORE ONLINE
