Subject: Oh baby baby, how was Ed supposed to know... - April18, 2005

OMMMM

Wow. Stories are fallin' apart right and left, Ed forgot his gym shoes AND the cafeteria was out of his favorite balsamic vinaigrette at lunch--yet Ed is strangely calm. Perhaps it's the power of his new mantra, which he learned from a very wise man by the name of George W. Schnarre: "It's all good, baby."

'Oops, Mommy,' No Britney

4/18/05
http://www.nypost.com/business/42885.htm

With a nod to the best of the parenting magazines reviewed today, we can be excused for taking a bow for our own recent playful cover mockup of Britney and baby, with such gems as, "Oops, Mommy I Did It Again," "Help Inside."

Parents magazine was writing about a Britney Spears pregnancy before the world knew ??” its readers' poll this month says 53 percent think she and hubby Kevin Federline should wait a couple of years before starting a family. Too bad Parents didn't splash the item on its cover (had it only known last week's news at press time). It could have boosted its sagging newsstand sales (down 23 percent last year), at 2.05 million, for this largest-circulation title.

Britney would love Child magazine, as it has plenty of big pictures, a brilliant fashion layout and some great advice on how to decorate her nursery. Editor Miriam Around, in the post for five years now, has done a great job in attracting more upscale readers and more advertisers. One of her tactics might be limiting the number of photos of kids; the current issue seems to carry more photos of adults than tykes. Ya never know.

Pushing (and Toeing) the Line in China
By David Barboza
4/18/05
http://www.nytimes.com/2005/04/18/business/worldbusiness/18shanghai.html?

BEIJING - Hu Shuli, the most powerful business editor in China, used to write propaganda for Workers' Daily, the Communist Party's publication. Now Ms. Hu pushes an aggressive staff of 50 young journalists to investigate government corruption and lift the veil on corporate fraud in China.

Since 1998, Ms. Hu, 52, has been the driving force behind Caijing magazine, a thriving business journal published twice a month that is now a must-read in the capital. At a time when the state still holds tight control over the media, regularly censoring articles and closing down errant publications, Caijing (which means "finance and economy") has artfully pushed the envelope on what is journalistically permissible, writing expos?©s on the government's reaction to severe acute respiratory syndrome, or SARS; stock market manipulation; and corruption at some of the nation's biggest state-owned banks.

"I know how to measure the boundary lines," Ms. Hu said over lunch. "We go up to the line - and we might even push it. But we never cross it."
