The Big Five O
By NY Daily Staff

Happy Anniversary O! The May issue - on newstands today - marks five years since Oprah Winfrey launched her magazine, O, which was the most successful startup ever. To celebrate, she threw a party for the 100-person staff and gave them each a bonus check for $5,000. She also took a minute to look back on some of her most - and least - favorite covers, which all feature the Queen of All Media.

After being photographed for 60 covers of her magazine, Oprah Winfrey recalls the good, the bad, the less-than flattering, hats and dresses she's loved and the shoot that changed her life in the the May issue of O. We've got an exclusive sneak peek.

SEPTEMBER 2002 "I've shot 60 covers, and this one is my least favorite. We went to a lot of trouble to shoot on a rooftop in front of New York's Chrysler Building, and, after all that, readers thought it was a fake background."

Esquire loses bet vs. Feds

PROBLEMS appear to be mounting for Esquire. Publisher Kevin O'Malley may be getting caught in the crosshairs of a federal investigation into illegal offshore-gambling operations.

The feds are not happy that Esquire had run five pages of ads for online gambling casino Bodog.com in the April issue.

Another insert in the June issue started printing Saturday. But now a source said that Hearst executives might be ready to pull the ad and replace it with public service spots as the feds turn up the heat.

Readers Can Shop More Online

Meredith Interactive yesterday introduced the Shop MoreStyle feature to let readers shop the pages of More magazine on its site at www.more.com in another advance for publishers seeking to deliver audiences to advertisers across channels.

Readers can click on each article of apparel for a direct link to the retailer's Web site. Fashion spreads in More magazine pages that are available for shopping online are marked with a Shop MoreStyle logo in the print magazine.

Topik Solutions installed the technology, which generates a pop-up link each time the cursor passes over an apparel item on a Shop MoreStyle page. The link takes the reader directly to the online retailer of the product or offers information on where the item can be bought.

Playboy Heads to the PSP
By CNN Staff
4/19/05
http://money.cnn.com/2005/04/19/technology/personaltech/playboy_psp/index.htm

Having conquered the iPod, Playboy is setting its sights on the PSP. Playboy Enterprises will announce plans Wednesday to offer nude and non-nude photo galleries that have been specifically formatted for viewing on Sony's Portable PlayStation.

"We know that many Playboy fans are also gaming enthusiasts who are likely to buy this type of device, so it was a natural progression for us to design this," said John. D. Thomas, editor of Playboy.com, in a statement.

Two non-nude galleries of 15 photos and a 2-3 minute video feature (both featuring 2005's Cyber Girl of the Year Amy Sue Cooper) will be available free on Playboy.com. Only subscribers to the site's "Cyber Club" will have access to the nude shots, which will also be available in two nude galleries and one video.
