Don??™t buy it
By Stephanie Zacharek

http://www.salon.com/ent/feature/2005/04/26/magalogs/index_np.html

Not so long ago, when Americans wanted to shop at home, they picked up a catalog or hit the Internet. But shopping magazines -- or magalogs, a concept first introduced by Cond?© Nast several years ago with the women's shopping magazine-turned-juggernaut Lucky -- have changed all that. Like catalogs, magalogs allow us to shop vicariously, to spend our money a hundred times over in our minds without forking over a penny. But unlike catalogs, which are simply good old-fashioned pleas on the part of a given company to get us to buy its goods, shopping magazines are allegedly on our side: Seeing how puzzled and bewildered we are by the ever-increasing array of stuff to buy, these magazines, staffed by a host of hip, with-it editors, take us by the hand to offer guidance, insight and wisdom -- they're a kind of Consumer Reports for the shopping-mall set.

Primedia Sheds Business Mags
By Keith J. Kelly 4/22/05

The bust-up of Primedia accelerated this week, with its business-to-business titles flopping on the block.

The long-slumping group seemed to be on a modest rebound last year with revenue of $224.8 million and earnings before interest, taxes depreciation and amortization of $37 million, up about 7 percent.

Men's Vogue Has Momentum
4/22/05
http://wwd.com/issue/article/98013

MEN??™S VOGUE HAS MOMENTUM: Now that Domino is up and kicking, talk within Cond?© Nast is centering on the company??™s likely next big launch ??” Men??™s Vogue ??” and it??™s a subject that doesn??™t exactly thrill several Cond?© Nast sales executives, sources said. That??™s because, in terms of both readers and ad dollars, Men??™s Vogue is seen as a possible threat to not only GQ, but also to Vanity Fair. Several executives have even gone as far as to suggest that Vogue and Men??™s Vogue publisher Tom Florio has been positioning it to advertisers as just that: ???the men??™s Vanity Fair.??? Florio, though, scoffed at that notion, saying, ???We would never position Vogue against anything else but Vogue.??? He did, however, acknowledge the two magazines share a similar spirit. ???When you read Vanity Fair, you feel like you??™re part of that world, not trying to catch a glimpse from the red carpet.??? Similarly, he said, ???[Men??™s Vogue] is not meant to be aspirational.???

With a target audience of affluent men older than 35, and a part controlled circulation-part newsstand model, the first issue will arrive in September. Around 400,000 copies will be distributed on newsstands and an additional 200,000 copies will be sent to an elite group of Cond?© Nast subscribers. Four issues of Men??™s Vogue ??” which will cover fashion, architecture, art, food and home ??” are planned for next year.
