******* LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - Meryl Streep has signed on to star in the fashionista comedy "The Devil Wears Prada." The Fox project is based on Lauren Weisberger's best-selling novel about a young woman who goes to New York to work for an all-powerful magazine editor named Miranda Priestly (Streep). Weisberger did a stint as an assistant to Vogue editor Anna Wintour. David Frankel is directing. Streep most recently starred in "Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events" and "The Manchurian Candidate." Her upcoming films include "Dark Matter" and the comedy "Prime," with Uma Thurman. 2. The U.S. Secret Service is investigating the disappearance of a container holding 40 backup tapes, Time Warner spokeswoman Kathy McKiernan said yesterday. Data-storage company Iron Mountain Inc. discovered the loss after a driver who picked up the tapes in New York performed a scan after his delivery in New Jersey, company spokeswoman Melissa Burman said. The probe hasn't found evidence that the tapes have been accessed or misused, New York-based Time Warner said. The case is the second-largest loss of personal data after an incident involving Bank of America Corp., which in February said it lost information on about 1.2 million federal government charge-card accounts, said Marc Rotenberg, executive director at Washington-based Electronic Privacy Information Center. The acquisition helps position Network Communications, the Lawrenceville, Ga.-based publisher of The Real Estate Book, New Home Finder and other real estate advertising publications, for rapid expansion in the fiercely competitive home and design market, chief executive Dan McCarthy said. "There is a lot of interest in the particular type of publication," McCarthy said. "This is a way to make a sizable entrance into the local design marketplace. The Wiesners have done a terrific job of putting together the largest single group of home and design magazines. There is no other publisher who has this many markets." MORE ONLINE 4. The Globe and MailPublishers want to cork wine mag By Sarah Efron 5/3/05 http://www.theglobeandmail.com/servlet/ArticleNews/TPStory/LAC/20050503/FOOD03/TPNational/Canada Magazine publishers are calling for the Liquor Control Board of Ontario to get out of the publishing industry. The Canadian Magazine Publishers Association submitted a document to the Ontario Beverage Alcohol System Review in March saying the LCBO's Food & Drink magazine unfairly competes with private publishers. Food & Drink is a glossy magazine of recipes and ideas for home decorating and entertaining that is an extremely popular item in Ontario liquor stores, where it is offered to customers for free. In 2004, Food & Drink was the 10th-largest-circulation magazine in Canada, and in the 2003-04 fiscal year, it took in $3.8-million in advertising from beverage companies as well as automobile, perfume and household-product retailers. The Canadian Magazine Publishers Association (CMPA) says this money would have otherwise gone to private-sector magazines and it is asking the Ontario government to eliminate advertising from the publication. However, the LCBO says the magazine is a key promotional tool and using advertising offsets its cost to Ontario taxpayers. Over the last 12 years, Food & Drink has gradually been transformed from a catalogue into a full-sized magazine geared towards promoting LCBO stores. However, Mark Jamison of the CMPA says it has one major advantage over private-sector magazines: It doesn't need to turn a profit. He says the magazine's big budgets for production, design and editorial content, and its exclusive access to LCBO retail outlets make it attractive to advertisers. Food & Drink also doesn't have the expense of maintaining a subscription base. MORE ONLINE
