Sex doesn't sell at Men's Journal

Go to a newsstand sometime and check out the rows of men's magazines. From the old guard of Playboy and Penthouse to the new wave of so-called lad magazines, it looks like a sea of soft-core porn.

Indeed, regardless of whether you see Tara, Carmen, Shannon or Lindsay on the covers, the magazines are largely indistinguishable from one another.

The women are shown reclining or twisting or pouting or grinning suggestively and (the magazines' editors hope) erotically. After all, sex sells, right? At Men's Journal, a monthly publication of Wenner Media which has a circulation of about 650,000, sex doesn't sell -- adventure does.

Michael Finkel Hacks Back
By Sheelah Kolhatkar

Last Tuesday, April 26, a disgraced former New York Times Magazine writer named Michael Finkel was doing his best Sebastian Junger imitation, chopping wood on his 51-acre property just outside of Bozeman, Mont.

"This is probably my favorite thing to do. Have you ever chopped wood?" said Mr. Finkel, 36, grunting and wielding an ax. "I love it, coming out here in negative-10-degree weather and hacking away. It definitely makes a man out of you." He put the logs away and scampered up a nearby hillside, heading for his favorite meditation spot. "I always fancied myself an outdoorsman, even though I'm a Jewish guy from the East Coast," he said.

In addition to proving his masculine prowess, the slender, bespectacled writer is attempting to smooth over his cracked reputation. In 2001, Mr. Finkel, then 32, was a rising star at The New York Times Magazine, having reported five cover stories in less than two years from locales like Afghanistan, the Gaza Strip and the bowels of a Haitian refugee boat. But after some difficult weeks in West Africa, Mr. Finkel filed a story in which he melded several African workers into one composite character. The Times Magazine ran the piece, "Is Youssouf Mal?© a Slave?", on the cover on Nov. 18, 2001. Mr. Finkel was busted soon after and fired by The Times Magazine's then editor, Adam Moss.

We Are All Paparazzi Now

A picture, they used to say, is worth a thousand words. Now it's more like half a million dollars. That's what Us Magazine is said to have paid last week for some innocuous photos of Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, the Hollywood "couple" of the moment, strolling along a secluded beach in Mombasa. The pictures set off a fierce bidding war between Us and its weekly rivals People, In Touch, and Star.

But the market for such photographs is no longer limited to the celebrity weeklies. Magazines such as In Style and Life&Style, along with many women's magazines, fill their pages with pictures of celebrities, dressed in designer fashion at "red carpet" events like award shows and openings.

Nor is the appetite for such pictures limited to the United States. "We can now sell pictures of these people all over the world," said Kevin Smith of Splash News. "It's amazing. There is really a worldwide fascination. Even in places like Estonia and Croatia." Splash News scored last week's second biggest scoop, the first photos of Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes - 16 years his junior - being unabashedly affectionate, out on the town together in Rome. Both stars, by the way, just happen to have movies coming out next month, and some are already declaring that their relationship is based more on publicity than passion.
