******* In an apology to readers this week, Newsweek acknowledged errors in a story alleging U.S. interrogators at Guantanamo Bay desecrated the Quran. The accusations, which the magazine vowed to re-examine, spawned protests in Afghanistan that left 15 dead and scores injured. Responding to harsh criticism from Muslim leaders worldwide, the Pentagon promised to investigate the charges and pinned the deadly clashes on Newsweek for what it described as "irresponsible" reporting. "We regret that we got any part of our story wrong, and extend our sympathies to victims of the violence and to the U.S. soldiers caught in its midst," Editor Mark Whitaker wrote in the apology. All the turmoil in the music business lately has us wondering how exactly is the actual music these days. We take a look at the magazines that make it their mission to let us know what we should be listening to. Coldplay is on the cover of Blender, which touts it as an exclusive. Hmmm. Let's ponder that: New album to promote from a major band; lead singer married to Gwyneth Paltrow. Exclusive? Don't think so . . . the interview itself is the standard "inside the band's space" thing that was tired in 1975. Much more interesting is the "Ultimate Rock Psycho" competition. A neat piece, especially the parts about "Bushwick Bill," a 3'8" sociopath and member of the Geto Boys. Still, one wonders how they left Wu-Tang Clan's late Ol' Dirty Bastard off. The guy used to ride around in stretch limos to cash his welfare checks, for Pete's sake. Rolling Stone features Orlando Bloom on the cover, guaranteeing that the issue will sell well and that it will be taped to the dormitory walls of college freshman girls in all 50 states well into 2006. The interview is a non- event, re vealing him to be a quiet man who suf fers from a bad back. The rest of the issue is typical Rolling Stone, which has devolved into the pop music 'zine of Moveon.org, running an article comparing Iraq to Vietnam. Yawn. Special anti-bonus: dozens of reviews of new music releases ??” and Rolling Stone pretty much liked them all! Aren't critics supposed to be critical? MORE ONLINE

As the New Yorker celebrates its 80th anniversary this week, Editor David Remnick would rather look ahead than rhapsodize about the good old days. And why not? While Remnick, 45, appreciates the magazine's legacy, he believes that these are the good old days for America's most celebrated magazine -- and it's hard to disagree with him. The New Yorker's pages, as ever, gleam with ideas. The magazine's 80th anniversary double issue (Feb. 14-21) contains the usual wide range of subjects, spanning Jane Mayer on how the U.S. outsources torture, Nicholas Lemann on the media, Roger Angell on his late stepfather E.B. White and Richard Preston on climbing the redwoods. MORE ONLINE
