Back on Your Radar

It's ba-a-a-ck! Next week the much buzzed-about, now better-financed new issue of Radar magazine hits the newsstands. Though it's called the "premiere issue" in its official Radar magazine "Fact Sheet," it is, in fact, the third issue of the magazine that Editor Maer Roshan has been trying to start for the past three years.

In the spring of 2003, Mr. Roshan scraped together enough money to produce two test issues. The first was compared to Talk, where he had been the editorial director and, during that magazine's last, troubled year, had improved the magazine's content, organized the staff, and cut the budget. The second test issue was compared to Spy magazine, which has been edited by Kurt Anderson and Graydon Carter.

In fact, Mr. Roshan says, both test issues of Radar were very much alike. "I don't care what people compare the magazine to as long as they like it," he told me. "Of course, there are bits and pieces of other magazines, but overall I think Radar is a new idea. It has a different voice. It is aimed at young, urban readers with a special sensibility. That's why I wanted to start it."

Consumer Reports is moving into the online medical-information business with the launch of a subscription-based site that aims to help consumers make better health decisions, the editors said Tuesday.

Consumer Reports Medical Guide, which can be found at www.ConsumerReportsMedicalGuide.org, is designed to help consumers understand their illnesses and compare treatment options based on evaluations of quality and effectiveness. View the Web site.

The venerable consumer magazine is teaming up with the British Medical Journal Publishing Group to produce tools it hopes will become the "gold standard" of Web-based health information, said Joel Gurin, executive vice president of Consumer Reports.

Graydon??™s Big Fat Free Wedding
By Jon Friedman

Why did Vanity Fair really cancel its annual Cannes Film Festival bash this year? Perhaps because the mag??™s in-house event planner was too busy organizing editor Graydon Carter??™s wedding. ???Graydon wanted Sara Marks [VF??™s director of special projects] to spend all her time working on his wedding, so he canceled Cannes,??? gripes a Cond?© Nast insider. ???Sara??™s doing it as part of her regular salary, which does not come out of Graydon??™s pocket. It??™s exactly the same thing he did when he wrote his book What We??™ve Lost??”getting all those researchers to work on it on the company dime.??? (VF spokeswoman Beth Kseniak said Marks??™s work on the wedding is a ???gift??? to Carter.)

With all that money saved on planning, what exotic locale has Carter chosen? Though the Canadian-born editor briefly considered tying the knot in Ireland, he later settled on a more prosaic setting for the May 21 nuptials: his own grandly named Swift House estate in Roxbury, Connecticut. (Pals Barry Diller and Diane von Furstenberg are hosting a small luncheon the next day at their nearby spread.)

With a VF staffer doing most of the grunt work, busy Carter can concentrate on more important things??”like the band. Rumor has it he??™s arranged for a ???big-name??? surprise musical guest to serenade his new bride, former VF publicist Anna Scott. Will Dominick Dunne be dusting off his banjo?.

LA and NYC--I have a great room in a three-bedroom apartment in Los Angeles' gorgeous Redondo Beach. The unit is two blocks from the beach and minutes from the young/hip Hermosa Beach spots. Parking is FREE and easy, and there's a dishwasher, washer/dryer, etc. in the apartment. The room is a fully furnished room that you would have to yourself, but you would share a bathroom. There will likely be only one roommate (female, 24) around for the majority of the summer. I am coming to NYC for July-most of August, and I would LOVE to swap for a similar situation in Manhattan. However, if you're moving to L.A. and would like a two-month beach home until you find more permanent residency, email me and hopefully we could work something out! OR if you're in NYC needing a two-month renter, let me know! Jayna jrust@lion.lmu.edu
