******* Ads for an upcoming reality TV series, "Beauty and the Geek" on the WB network, were rejected by two weekly magazines at Time Inc. -- People and Entertainment Weekly -- apparently because they were too sexy and provocative. "We got a call from their folks on the West Coast saying they were not going to be able to run the ads because they were too risque or something," said Kris Coontz, head of Grey Entertainment, the ad agency for the WB. He said he was not able to learn exactly who on the inside had objected, but that the magazines asked for a different version to run in its place. Uncensored ads for the show ran in rival print weeklies, including Us Weekly, Star, In Touch and Life & Style. Those ads showed a doll-sized geeky-looking guy in a white short-sleeve shirt and white socks suspended from his head by the bikini-clad bosom of a shapely model. MORE ONLINE

Although Budget Living is all about affordability, the magazine is digging deep into its own pockets for a slightly richer design. "We're three years old, and it's time to polish and adapt with the times," said BL owner Don Welsh, who noted there is growing competition for a similar demographic from titles such as Cond?© Nast's Domino and Lucky. In the April/May issue, the title tweaked its logo by shrinking the size of "Budget" and expanding "Living," as well as upgrading the title's paper stock. The June/July issue unveils Budget Living's sleek new look. The magazine also expanded its personal finance coverage, expanded its Cheap Sheet column and added a Wall Street-style ticker to the bottom of the section's pages. MORE ONLINE

Journalists strive to be influential. But there can't be many who would hope to affect events the way Newsweek has in Afghanistan. The anti-American street protests that erupted there earlier this month--after the magazine reported that a Pentagon investigation would support claims that guards at the U.S. detention center at Guantanamo Bay flushed a copy of the Koran down a toilet--left as many as 17 dead and scores injured. As it turned out, Muslim sensibilities and the U.S.'s image were not the only casualties. Even after retracting the Koran claim, Newsweek found itself in the center of the storm. In a note to the magazine's readers last week, editor Mark Whitaker said the report had been based on information from "a knowledgeable U.S. government source." But, he went on, that source was no longer certain that he had read about the alleged incident in the still unreleased Pentagon report. MORE ONLINE

The feminine fitness mags want to help the gals get in fatale shape in time for bikini season; goodness knows the guys are ready. Nothing deflates our dreams of getting a bikini-ready body quicker than a celebrity with the benefit of a personal trainer and private chef. Self reminds us of this in a June issue that spends a lot of time sizing up the stars. Interviews with two hard-bodied actresses reveal that Elisabeth Rohm just loves her personal trainer, while Jennifer Garner (lately rumored to be sporting more of a baby bump than a bikini bulge) gives a nice shout-out to hers. A six-step dance workout by a celebrity choreographer seems pathetic when compared with the training hours logged by the likes of J. Lo, Madonna and Gwen Stefani. And a spread on getting a "Tinseltown tummy" at home with a few Pilates moves doesn't seem to inspire much hope either. Oh well, maybe next summer. No woman's fitness magazine is complete without the four-week, fix-everything makeover plan. Shape doesn't disappoint us in that regard. If it doesn't work -- and statistics show that it won't -- the magazine recommends turning to a buddy for dieting support. While we like the idea of eating every day with friends, we can only manage brunch and a mimosa once a week on Sundays. Perhaps sensing this defeatist attitude, Shape comes to the rescue with a happiness checklist, like getting some much-needed R&R or taking a vacation. This assumes, of course, that those activities don't involve eating bonbons on the couch or drinking pina coladas on the beach. MORE ONLINE
