Print Buyers Relieved by Meredith's Acquisition of G + J Mags
By David Kaplan

MEREDITH CORPORATION'S PLAN TO BUY Gruner + Jahr's Parents, Child, Fitness, and Family Circle magazines for $350 million is a win-win for both, media buyers say, as the former will grow its portfolio of women's lifestyle publications and the latter closes a messy chapter in its bid for global expansion.

In a conference call with Meredith executives, the company said it expects the sale to close in early June. Furthermore, Meredith expects the addition of the G+J titles to generate pre-tax earnings in the low-to-mid $30 million range. The sale will give Meredith publications a reach of more than 135 million adult American women.

"Parents, Child, Fitness, and Family Circle are established and well-known consumer magazines that will benefit greatly from Meredith's proven editorial, circulation, sales, database, and brand-building expertise," said Bill Kerr, Meredith's chairman and chief executive officer, speaking on a conference call Tuesday morning. "These titles have significant upside, but have underperformed in recent years. We possess the unique skills and resources needed--particularly in the circulation area--to help these magazines realize their potential."

United Nations of Magazines

Almost 900 publishers - some from as far away as Cambodia - are in New York to attend the 2005 World Conference of the International Federation of the Periodical Press (FIPP) at the Waldorf Astoria. But the talk of the day was about the purchase - by the most all-American of publishing companies, the Des Moines-based Meredith Corporation - of four magazines owned by the German publishing giant, Gruner + Jahr.

Meredith has reached an agreement in principle with Gruner + Jahr to acquire Parents, Child, Fitness, and Family Circle magazines for $350 million. The transaction is subject to completion of due diligence, execution of definitive agreements, and certain closing conditions. As part of the transaction, G + J also will, until the end of June, have an option to sell Inc. and Fast Company to Meredith.

If Meredith does acquire the business publications, it currently plans to sell these magazines through a private sale or auction. G + J acquired Fast Company from New York Daily News publisher Mort Zuckerman for $300 million just before the dot-com crash in 2000.

Donald Graham Ascends to Calm Newsweek Bunch
By Tom Scocca

What does it mean when a news-weekly becomes the news story of the week? On May 18, Newsweek invited its rank-and-file staff to join the editors in the conference room for the weekly cover meeting to address the implications, both internal and external.

The expanded invitation was a break from the usual Wednesday routine, according to a Newsweek staffer. But crisis management at the embattled newsweekly had reached a crucial point. Two days earlier, editor Mark Whitaker had retracted a May 9 item about alleged Koran abuse at Guant??namo Bay. Now, top executives had descended on New York. Donald Graham, chief executive of the Washington Post Company, came in from Washington; Newsweek chairman and editor in chief Richard M. Smith had cut short a trip to Asia and flown back.

Mr. Graham opened the meeting with a speech seeking to rally the staff, according to one person who was in the room. He recalled his tenure as publisher of The Washington Post in 1981, when Janet Cooke's Pulitzer Prize??“winning story of a child drug addict was exposed as a fraud.

NYC: Do you know someone who needs a tenant or roommate for July 1? If so, this nonsmoking, gainfully employed twentysomething is seeking an apartment or share. No pets, one plant. Mostly books. ALL is negotiable, including (to some degree) rent and move-in date. I have visions of a neighborhood with more trees than razor-wire fences, and fewer rats than people. But by and large, I'm pretty unfussy. If you have any leads or know someone who might, please let me know. And I'd very much appreciate your forwarding this email on to anyone you consider appropriate. Sarah_Robbins@condenast.com.
