******* For 30 years, The Washington Post kept secret the identity of Deep Throat, waiting for the right moment to disclose the name of the person who helped the paper develop the biggest story in its history. Yesterday, the paper was scooped on Deep Throat's identity by a monthly magazine. The revelation by the magazine, Vanity Fair, caught The Post by surprise and threw the paper into turmoil. The initial reaction was not to comment. But at 5:29 p.m., the newspaper confirmed on its Web site that W. Mark Felt was Deep Throat. "It really landed on us," said Benjamin C. Bradlee, The Post's executive editor during the Watergate era. "I had no idea it was coming." MORE ONLINE
2. The New York Observer
Before W. Mark Felt was conclusively identified as Deep Throat, he took on one last alias: ???The Guy.??? That was how Mr. Felt-the former F.B.I. official who'd secretly leaked Watergate developments to Bob Woodward of The Washington Post-was known around the offices of Vanity Fair as the magazine put together a piece by Mr. Felt's attorney, John D. O'Connor, revealing his long-concealed identity. The small circle of staffers who edited and laid out the story signed non-disclosure agreements, said David Friend, the magazine's editor of creative development and the editor of the piece. Mr. Friend said that he and editor Graydon Carter had dummied the piece into the July issue under the working title "Wig," a semi-allusion to "Watergate." MORE ONLINE 3. Media PostSI.com Boosts Magazine Article With Streaming Video Add-Ons By Gavin O'Malley 6/01/05 http://publications.mediapost.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=Articles.san&s=30736&Nid=13732&p=256602 THE ONLINE EDITION OF SPORTS Illustrated went live Tuesday with a crash-and-burn broadband video segment to complement this week's print feature spotlighting Tony Stewart and the world of dirt-track car racing. Posted on SI.com, one video features magazine author Lars Anderson interviewing Stewart about his experiences racing at the Eldora Speedway, while another includes more rams than an Appalachian mountainside. This is the first of many such content crossover arrangements Sports Illustrated has planned for the rest of 2005 heading into 2006, said Jeff Price, vice president and chief of marketing at SI.com. "The idea is to play both mediums to their strengths," said Price. "We're looking forward to great online/print opportunities for the editions coming up that will be devoted to college and pro football." The publication's goal is to continue to increase the content and value of Sports Illustrated subscriptions, so it continues to justify its $50 yearly price tag in an ever more competitive media climate, Price confirmed. Smith 6/01/05 http://www.detnews.com/2005/business/0506/01/C01-199735.htm Struggling Northwest Airlines is cutting yet another customer amenity -- free magazines on airplanes and in its WorldClub airport lounges. "We are eliminating all magazines on all our flights," Northwest spokesman Kurt Ebenhoch said Tuesday. The new policy took affect Tuesday and will save the financially-strapped airline about $565,000 a year in magazine subscriptions. Detroit Metropolitan Airport's main carrier will continue to provide its own World Traveler magazine to customers. MORE ONLINE
