Readers Digest on Cruise Control
By Gavin O??™Malley

http://www.radaronline.com/fresh-intelligence/2005/06/08/index.php#report_001069

Did Reader??™s Digest sell its soul to the Church of Scientology to get Tom Cruise on the cover of its current issue? According to several sources inside the world??™s largest-selling monthly, the magazine??™s editor-in-chief, Jackie Leo, wanted Cruise as her cover boy but was impeded by the magazine??™s history with the controversial group.

Back in 1991, Reader??™s Digest excerpted an in-depth investigative piece from Time magazine entitled Scientology: The Cult of Greed. Among other things, the article asserted that the church ???is a highly profitable global racket that survives by intimidating members and critics in a Mafia-like manner.???

In response, the church filed injunctions aimed at blocking Reader??™s Digest from publishing the story in its international editions. But Scientology??™s lawyers ultimately lost, and the mag gained cred beyond its walker-waving readership for standing up to the cult??™s bullying ways.

Florio Makes Vogue the Height of Fashion For Advertisers
By Pranay Gupte

http://www.nysun.com/article/15084

Thomas Florio, publisher of Vogue, is a supremely self-confident man. "There are people who love to win, and there are people who hate to lose," Mr. Florio said over lunch. "I expect to win. I'm not modest about my ambitions for Vogue. I'm expected to deliver. But I also have perspective."

The 49-year-old Long Island-born man and the 112-year-old magazine whose financial health he's responsible for have never been in better shape. But Mr. Florio knows that in the face of increased competition for ads, especially from the Internet, he cannot afford to let up concerning one of the world's best-known brands.

Weekend Reading for the Second-Home Set
By Myrna Blyth

http://www.nysun.com/article/15112

The notion of a magazine all about the weekend has been around for several years. A decade ago Metropolitan Home used to produce individual issues all about what to do with your weekend (and your weekend home). Many home magazines have summer issues that discuss weekend homes and casual Saturday night get-togethers. Sally Koslow, former editor of McCall's and Lifetime, even developed a magazine called Friday.

In fact, at many magazine brainstorming sessions, publishers often pitch the idea of doing a magazine focused on the weekend lifestyle. Up until now, the idea has been shot down. But this month, Hearst is launching Weekend, with 500,000 copies on the newsstand and a cover price of $3.95. Aimed at affluent working women over the age of 35 - who presumably can't wait for Friday - the magazine will deal with every aspect of weekend life, including food and entertaining, travel, decorating, organizing, and ideas on how to spend your personal time, whether at home or away.

Fast Company Fights for its Life
By John Friedman

John Byrne has received a crash course in the harsh realities of the publishing business since he became the editor-in-chief of Fast Company two years ago.

Last fall, the media reported that McGraw-Hill's (MHP: news, chart, profile) BusinessWeek had put Byrne on a short list to succeed Editor-in-Chief Stephen Shepard, whose retirement was imminent. As it turned out, Stephen Adler, who had been the deputy managing editor of Dow Jones' Wall Street Journal (DJ: news, chart, profile) and editorial director of the Journal's online edition, got the job. (MarketWatch is a unit of Dow Jones, the publisher of this report).

Now, it's Fast Company that is engaged in another kind of fight -- for its life. Bertelsmann's Gruner + Jahr, the magazine publisher, is in the process of selling Fast Company (along with its sister publication, Inc.). Gruner + Jahr is contemplating bids and it could select a winner as soon as next week.
