1. Business 2.0
The Quiet Giant of Magazines
By Greg Lindsay
6/9/05
http://www.business2.com/b2/web/articles/0,17863,1070018,00.html

Unlike everyone else in the business press, I have come to praise Meredith and not to bury Gruner & Jahr. Ever since the German publisher announced last month that it will sell the bulk of its magazine portfolio -- Family Circle, Parents, Child, and Fitness -- to Meredith Corp. (with a sale of Fast Company and Inc. to follow), the conventional wisdom has been unanimous: G&J blew it.

The instant history written about the deal has focused almost entirely on the losers: the architect of the disaster, ousted CEO Dan Brewster; the man brought in to fix the mess, Russell Denson (who never knew that his German bosses were planning to cut bait on him), and poor Axel Ganz, the departing CEO of G&J International, who delayed his retirement five years in a futile attempt to turn the company around and now finds his career ending in defeat instead. And there are more sad stories to be told -- the withering of two once-great business magazines, Fast Company and Inc.; the implosion, sale, and death of YM; the layoffs sure to ensue after all the magazines change hands.

But no one has really stepped forward to sing the praises of the big winner -- the most stable and clearheaded publisher in business today and now the second-largest magazine publisher in the country in terms of circulation. Meredith is bigger than Cond?© Nast and bigger than Hearst, but it's a safe bet that no one is scheming to crash the next Traditional Home party held in Manhattan, and no one is sending surreptitious cell-phone photos of Ladies' Home Journal's editor to Gawker Stalker..

The Death of Reading Magazines
By Deann Welker
6/2/05
http://www.bookslut.com/magazine_whore/2005_06_005723.php

???Is it me? I hope it's not me. No. No, it's not me, it's you.??? That is the internal conversation I have with nearly every magazine I pick up to "read." The reason, of course, is most magazines no longer seem to think I am looking for something to, you know, "read."

I don't know when U.S. magazine publishers decided that the public is more interested in short blurbs than in-depth writing that might teach readers something. But, with a few notable exceptions, it's happened. My fear is that it's too late to go back..

I can't really blame the magazine industry, though. It is, after all, just giving the majority of magazine readers what they want. Or need. It is giving them something they can skim but still call "reading"; something that takes almost zero brain power, but that most people will glean at least a nugget of trivial information from so they feel like they are learning. But they're not.

3. Jossip
Jossip Hops on the Radar Wagon
By Staff Writers
6/9/05
http://www.jossip.com/gossip/announcement/jossip-hops-on-the-radar-wagon-20050609.php

On an administrative note, we wanted to alert readers that Jossip's editor David Hauslaib will begin doing some work for Radar magazine. Yes, that magazine. We'll let the reader mail console our soul, but just think how closer that makes us to Maer Roshan. We're practically related now.

That means our Radar-related coverage might be a bit more tame (is "respectful" the right word?), but don't worry - if Mort Zuckerman sells the magazine or Maer bakes a cake for a blog publisher's face, we'll be on it.
