It's a Starbucks kind of day

Ed wants an iced grande soy latte, like, NOW. Do you have one? Can you give him one? He likes to think he's too busy and important to go out and get one for himself. That's so gross, isn't it? He's gross.

Summertime and girl watching is in full-swing. For those men who have neither time nor patience for the beach, there are the lad mags.

Although third-ranked laddy magazine Stuff splashes lovely Colombian sex kitten Sofia Vergara on its cover, the magazine is suffering the same newsstand fate as its brothers--sales that stink. Stuff's single copy sales are down 21.1percent in the latest Audit Bureau of Circulations data.(Maxim's stand sales are off 16.9percent, FHM's are down 5.4 percent.) Stuff remains mired in the laddy syndrome: cluttered pages, sophomoric humor and airbrushed, surgically-enhanced starlets. It's all fairly tame stuff with quick factoid reads, which helps to explain why the genre is wildly popular with campus subscribers, where loyal subscribers keep renewing until they flunkout. All the lady titles enjoyed double-digit gains in subscriptions in the latest data: FMH up21.3 percent; Stuff up 10percent, and Maxim up7.5 percent.

If you can believe it, Maxim actually has Carmen Electra on the cover! Who would've thunk she'd pose oiled up in a slinky bikini with her legs in the air for a magazine? The world just continues to shock us these days. . .The magazine works because it absolutely refuses to take itself, anything or anyone seriously. Like every other issue, this one is a pastiche of factoids about sex, drinking, and gadgets you can use before or after sex or drinking. Which is not to say it isn't clever - a two page, er, spread on "What's in her head during sex?" is as funny as heck.

Forget About Milk and Bread. Give Me Gossip!

Tired of celebrity coverage? Millions of readers can't get enough - and neither can advertisers. Publishers of celebrity magazines that once looked to newsstand and checkout-aisle sales for almost all of their revenue are now experiencing surges in subscriptions and ad sales, bringing in the kind of money that could make a movie star jealous.

Us Weekly's ad pages are up nearly 25 percent in the last year, and at Star Magazine, ads are up almost 17 percent, according to the Publishers Information Bureau. In Touch Weekly's ads have risen nearly 22 percent.

Advertisers are finding star-focused magazines to be advertising-friendly environments. "People typically read those magazines front to back, and that's always a good thing for an advertiser," said Bill Koenigsberg, chief executive of Horizon Media, an ad agency based in New York.

AMI Revamps Fitness Startup

In January, American Media Inc. launched Looking Good Now, a health magazine for women who have just begun to embrace a healthy lifestyle.

But since its inception, the 10-times-yearly title has suffered from lackluster newsstand and advertising sales, according to sources familiar with the situation, and has had to alter both its business strategy and its editorial positioning.

Following publication of its first issue, LGN reduced its rate base to 150,000 from 300,000, due to disappointing sales; AMI also ended its exclusive distribution deal with Wal-Mart and broadened its reach to other retailers. The move led Wal-Mart to reduce the number of pockets carrying the magazine from an estimated 25,000 to 11,000. Looking Good Now currently sells an estimated 200,000 single copies, according to AMI publisher's estimates.

'Far Side' Fans Hear Echo at The New Yorker
By Sara Ivry

http://www.nytimes.com/2005/06/13/business/media/13cartoon.html

Last week's cartoon caption contest in The New Yorker could have been an example of art imitating art, or simply more proof to fans of Gary Larson that all roads lead to "The Far Side."

The winning entry, for an illustration showing two monster-movie dinosaurs speaking while devouring a city, was "Remember that time you made me laugh and people came out of my nose?" The punch line bore a marked similarity to a "Far Side" quip from 1985, although in the original, it was lions with antlers coming out of their noses.

Bob Mankoff, The New Yorker's cartoon editor, shrugged off suggestions that the magazine and Dr. David Markham, the dentist from North Carolina who submitted the winning entry, unwittingly engaged in cartoon plagiarism. "This idea of laughing so hard that things come out of your nose is not completely uncommon," he said. Dr. Markham said he didn't remember reading that particular "Far Side," "But you never know."

Cond?© Nast publishing mogul Si Newhouse might be short of stature - standing just over 5 feet tall - but he's a colossus when it comes to money and power.

So the Manhattan media world is buzzing about Candace Bushnell's sendup of a Newhouse-like character in her latest novel of New York life, "Lipstick Jungle."

The book isn't scheduled to be released till late summer, but Hyperion has rushed out galleys featuring a certain Walter Bozack, "the owner, president and CEO of Ratz Neste Publishing."
