His Star is falling

AMERICAN Media, owner of Star, Shape and the National Enquirer, released its full-year earnings numbers yesterday - and they ain't pretty.

For the first time since CEO David Pecker came on board, the red ink is flowing. In a significant blow, Standard & Poor's said it was downgrading the company's nearly $1 million in debt to a "B" rating from "B+."

A "B" grade is generally given to a company considered to be bottom-rung - and still a running concern, Wall Street observers said. "The rating action reflects the decline in fiscal fourth-quarter operating performance, eroding tabloid circulation and profitability, increased competition in the celebrity magazine market niche, and rising debt leverage," said Standard & Poor's credit analyst Hal F. Diamond.

For Radar, its time may have passed
By Lorraine Sanders

Looking back, it's now clear that Maer Roshan's biggest mistake was in launching Radar two years ago. Though it only lasted two issues, it was innovative, and it got people talking.

People talking is good. The problem is that it built up expectations, as it turns out expectations that could not be met when Radar relaunched at the end of May. For many, the reborn Radar is a disappointment. A lot of what's in the new Radar is what was in it two years ago. It was innovative then, but in the time since the world has moved on, and the sense of critics is that Roshan and his Radar have not.

Tellingly, the new Radar cover features Paris Hilton and George W. Bush. For a magazine that promises to be on the cutting edge, critics note, these are throw-back figures. As much as they may be in the news, they are old news, especially for the young hip urbanites the magazine aims to attract as readers. Radar targets young, educated professionals with a median age of 31 and a household income of $75,000+. It launched with a rate base of 150,000.
