Fund Research Kingpin Wins Inc., Fast Company
By Keith J. Kelly

Joe Mansueto, the billionaire chairman of Morningstar Inc., has emerged as the winning bidder for Inc. and Fast Company magazines -- the final two titles remaining in Gruner + Jahr's disastrous U.S. magazine portfolio, according to people close to the situation.

The $40 million deal could be announced as early as today, these people say.

Mansueto swept away five contenders for the two business titles, including The Economist, Time Inc., the Newhouse family's American City Business Journals, and two Boston-based private-equity firms, Alta Communications and Abry Partners.

Jane Bares (Almost) All
6/20/05
http://www.nypost.com/business/48614.htm

OK, it is officially summer.

Jane's cover line promises that "everyone in this issue is NAKED (in one way or another), and to a certain extent Jane doesn't disappoint. There's a nearly-naked Anna Kournikova on the cover (it's a stunner), and a spread of the 11 people Jane thinks you most want to see naked, including Jeff Probst, the host of "Survivor." A fashion spread featuring nude-colored clothes is for those who can't help covering up.

Marie Claire offers up some weightier fare, including a story about prostitutes in Holland and another on baby-snatchers, troubled women who are desperate to be Moms. But with Angelina Jolie on the cover promising to "set the record straight," who cares about anything else. No, she did not have sex with That Man. Jen must be so relieved. The back page essay is a disappointment for singles; it promises to dissect the "One Before The One" phenomena -- girl grooms guy for marriage, guy marries someone else -- but is just an other smug- married missive.

I'm In Love. Why Shouldn't I Be Paid?
By David Carr

ROMANCE is not dead in Hollywood. It has just become another profit center.

Celebrities who for years watched as their hook-ups, both real and imagined, fueled dozens of magazines and televisions shows are figuring out that the right two hearts beating in unison can sound an awful lot like a cash register.

Last week, "Britney and Kevin: Chaotic," tracing their relationship from transparent lust to fecund resolution, concluded its season on UPN. The show seems enormously intrusive, with cameras practically jammed up the couple's noses as they courted and mated.

Pubs Retool Their Money Coverage With Women in Mind
By Stephanie D. Smith

As more women become their families??™ breadwinners, they are also increasingly becoming the ones to decide how to invest and spend the money they bring in. But aside from a blip during the dot-com bubble, personal finance and business magazines continue to speak mostly to men, including Time Inc.'s Money and Fortune, as well as SmartMoney, published by Hearst Magazines and Dow Jones & Co. Previous efforts at serving women -- Meredith Corp.??™s Family Money, Hearst/Dow Jones' Offspring and Money's spinoff Money for Women -- quickly fizzled once the bubble burst.

Undaunted, this summer publishers are taking another shot at women, albeit with more tempered approaches. A number of new publications are covering money in a female-friendly manner, while established financial publications have tweaked their pages to cover subjects more likely to concern women -- and in some cases specifically young women.

For those just dipping their toes into financial matters, independent startup Bee will aim to serve as their foundation before moving on to Kiplinger??™s Personal Finance. The $5.95 quarterly, which launches in October with a 100,000 circulation, will target career-driven twentysomething and thirtysomething women.

No, Blender is NOT Rolling Stone
By Jon Friedman

No, four-year-old Blender doesn't want to be Rolling Stone when it grows up.

It's practically impossible to write a story about pop music magazines without mentioning Rolling Stone, which has been the measuring stick since its inception in 1967.

In its halcyon days, it was so revered and influential that it was once called the Time magazine of the counter-culture.
