******* Glossy magazine publisher Jason Binn yesterday conceded that his company, Niche Media LLC, used a list of advertising contacts belonging to rival Boston magazine, according to a statement issued by Boston magazine. The statement was part of a settlement deal between the two publishers. Boston magazine sued Niche Media last month, claiming the publisher and three former Boston magazine employees used information from Boston magazine's proprietary database to snag advertisers. The suit came as New York-based Niche Media prepares to make its local debut with the launch of celebrity and power scene magazine Boston Common in September, a move that could put pressure on Boston magazine. The celebrity magazines sustain themselves on a limited and predictable set of story lines: Girl meets boy. They're keeping their affair quiet. They've gone public! Will the young couple wed? They're engaged! When and where will they get married? They're married! Wow, what a deluxe honeymoon! They want children, but can they get pregnant? She's pregnant! Is he cheating? It's a boy! It's twin boys! He's left her! The celebrity magazine formula endures because 1) it speaks to basic human obsessions, 2) because the breeding-age "stars" the magazines showcase benefit professionally from all the publicity, and 3) because the stories follow a predictable, steady pattern as comforting to the reader as a soft rain on the rooftop at night. This recipe is flexible enough to allow both spoon-fed "facts" from publicists and original reporting by writers. As a result, a magazine may report in the same story that a star has hospitalized himself for "exhaustion," and that his anonymous friends say he's at the end of a coke binge. But such disparities have never thrown the genre into the editorial turmoil it's endured from the eight-week-old Tom Cruise-Katie Holmes affair. The blitzkrieg relationship of the A-list star and his C-list TV-star fianc?©e, which peaked last Friday with a proposal of marriage atop the Eiffel Tower and a press conference afterward, has caused the celebrity magazine formula to warp and buckle. Less than a month ago, Steven T. Florio insisted that he was not writing a tell-all memoir about his exploits as chief executive at Cond?© Nast, the New York magazine empire. "That would be so beneath me," he told The Daily News. "I have no desire to write a dishy book; I give you my word as a gentleman. I would never betray any of my colleagues." But it appears that Mr. Florio, now vice chairman of Advance Publications, which owns Cond?© Nast, is steeped in writing just such a book. The book, titled "Managing the Gods," is close to being sold to Crown Publishers and is being co-written with Jim Jerome, a former writer for People magazine, according to industry executives with knowledge of the sale. To conjure the archetype of the Vogue man, Men??™s Vogue editor Jay Fielden turned to literature. His new magazine, he had been saying, will be guided by the concept of "things that are real, things that are authentic, things that endure." So forget Marc or Calvin for the moment. "I was reading this obituary about Saul Bellow when he died, in The Times, and they had this quote in there, and it said??”and I??™ll read it to you??”I??™ve got it here," Mr. Fielden said, on the phone from his office in the Cond?© Nast tower. Mr. Fielden read: "He admired and befriended Chicago??™s deal-makers and real-estate men, and he dressed like one of them in bespoke suits and Turnbull and Asser shirts. He was a devoted, self-taught cook, as well as a gardener, a violinist and a sports fan." MORE ONLINE
