******* Two days before its $350 million buy of Gruner + Jahr's women-centric titles is finalized, Meredith named Midwest Living publisher James Carr as Family Circle publisher and G+J exec and ex-YM editor Linda Fears as its editor-in-chief. Both Carr and Fears will report to Meredith's senior publishing group VP Tom Harty. The pair will work out of Meredith's New York offices. In all, 315 G+J staffers will be retained, 75 given temporary positions and 75 displaced. Carr replaces Peg Ferrell, a former Country Living publisher and 15-year Time Inc. vet who had been with G+J since 2000. Fears replaces Susan Ungaro, Family Circle's editor-in-chief for over 11 years MORE ONLINE

???The same Constitution that protects the freedom of the press requires obedience to final decisions of the courts and respect for their rulings and judgments,??? Norm Pearlstine, editor-in-chief of Time Inc., said in a statement announcing that the company will comply with a court order to deliver documents, eliminating the need for soon-to-be-jailed Matt Cooper to testify. It's a nice civics lesson. And one, we're sure, that has nothing to do with the judge in the case threatening the company with ???very large??? fines, or with the wacko special prosecutor saying he might press for contempt charges against individual officers of the company - like, say, Pearlstine. UBM said it had decided to sell the two highly profitable magazines after a review concluded that they would be "more valuable to other organisations". UBM said it had already received approaches for the magazines and has hired investment bank Merrill Lynch to manage the sale. The review of the titles' future followed a reorganisation in May that saw David Levin take over as the group chief executive and Bernard Gray take control of United Advertising Publications, the division that houses the magazines.
