In an April 19 front-page article in The Wall Street Journal, "How Companies Pay TV Experts For On-Air Product Mentions," Child technology editor James Oppenheim, a frequent guest "expert" on local and national news programs including NBC's Today Show, was revealed as being paid as much as $12,500 by clients such as Kodak to plug their products on the air without disclosing his relationship with the companies to the networks, their viewers or the magazine. According to the Journal report, Oppenheim, on a Today appearance late last year, had been paid for local television satellite media tours by at least eight of the 15 companies whose products he mentioned in the segment. The disclosures prompted former Child publisher G+J USA (which has since sold its entire consumer portfolio to Meredith) to sever its relationship with Oppenheim. On the same day, magazine publishers and advertisers were trumpeting the advances in "product integration" during New York Magazine Day, an annual pow-wow of ad buyers and sellers. In one session, entitled "Breaking With Conventional Media Partnership Wisdom: A Fresh Look at Media Marketer Synergies," Real Simple publisher Robin Domeniconi spoke about how her magazine's brand exposure on national morning shows is a selling point with advertisers."It could mean 20 spots on The Today Show. You need to be up front about what their goals are." MORE ONLINE
