******* Bauer Publishing's Life & Style announced it will raise its rate base to 500,000 from 350,000 effective Sept. 1, a 43 percent increase. The magazine will also obtain an additional 50,000 racks, bringing the total to 160,000 nationwide. "Life & Style has created a brand new niche in the weekly category with its blend of celebrity news and lifestyle trends," said Rosanna Giacalone, publisher of Life & Style. "Consumers are fascinated by celebrity lifestyle trends, and Life & Style shows readers how to create and buy them." 2. NY Observer: Media Mob Janice Min: Free Lunch or Free Agency 7/12/05 http://mediamob.observer.com/2005/07/janice-min-free-lunch-or-free-agency.html Us Weekly editor Janice Min and Wenner Media agree on what she should be paid: $1.2 million per year, according to a source familiar with Min's contract negotiations. But they don't agree about what she can serve for lunch. Owing to an impasse over staff perks--including catered meals--Min's contract expired last week before a new one could be signed. Though the New York Post reported last month that the two sides had settled on a deal, Min is now a free agent. So if your publication needs punchier cover lines, try meeting Min's price--and bringing some cold cuts. On July 4, Whole Foods delivered lunchtime sandwiches to Us staffers who were spending the nation's birthday at the office. The workers also got catered breakfast and dinner. According to a source familiar with the negotiations, Min wants make such holiday meals a permanent perk at the magazine. She also wants to fill three currently vacant staff positions and to allow staffers to expense cab rides home after 9 p.m. MORE ONLINE 3. The best catchphrase of the year so far is: MORE ONLINE 5. Wall Street Journal Democrats moved to capitalize on the news that President Bush's strategist, Karl Rove, passed along word of a CIA operative's employment, while the White House declined to address questions about past statements that anyone involved in the "outing" would be fired. While prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald and a federal grand jury continue probing potential criminal violations, Democrats stepped up attacks on Mr. Rove. Rep. Henry Waxman of California asked the Republican chairman of the Committee on Government Reform to hold hearings into the "extraordinary" actions of Mr. Rove. The escalating Democratic rhetoric followed an important turn in the two-year saga of former diplomat Joseph Wilson, who in 2003 publicly questioned the Bush administration's justification for the Iraq war, and of his wife, Valerie Plame, whose status as a Central Intelligence Agency employee was subsequently reported by columnist Robert Novak and Time magazine. Democrats used a Newsweek article about internal Time emails showing that Mr. Rove told reporter Matt Cooper that Mr. Wilson's wife worked for the CIA to cast the administration as underhanded and bullying in its conduct of foreign policy.
