******* Two days before he was sworn into office, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger accepted a consulting job paying an estimated $8 million over five years to "further the business objectives" of a national publisher of health and bodybuilding magazines.: The contract pays Schwarzenegger 1% of the magazines' advertising revenue, much of which comes from makers of nutritional supplements. Last year, the governor vetoed legislation that would have imposed government regulations on the supplement industry.. According to records filed Wednesday with the Securities and Exchange Commission, Schwarzenegger entered into the agreement with a subsidiary of American Media Inc. on Nov. 15, 2003. The Boca Raton, Fla.-based company publishes Muscle & Fitness and Flex magazines, among others. MORE ONLINE

It's a special sense, a feeling in the gut, one of sudden alarm. It's the sense that the magazine you're editing is about to fold. It came to John Byrne a few weeks back, on May 24. That morning, in a stunning announcement, Gruner + Jahr said it was selling its four family magazines to Meredith. But left on the table in the deal were Inc. and Fast Company, Byrne's magazine. Word on the street was that someone would buy Inc. "It was kind of like being in a hostage crisis," says Byrne, recalling the feeling that crept over him that day. MORE ONLINE
3. Fashion Week Daily
http://www.fashionweekdaily.com/content/templates/gallery.asp?articleid=7282&zoneid=1 Hot on the heels of gallant gossiper Lloyd Grove's explosive Elle story in today's Lowdown, The Daily hears that Elle fashion director Nina Garcia is being aggressively courted by Glenda Bailey. Sources tell The Daily that Harper's Bazaar's editrix has her heart set on Nina as the replacement for former fashion market director Amanda Ross, who recently fled her post for a new life in Los Angeles. Sources close to Nina reveal that the ultrachic editor, now a household name thanks to her judging stint on Project Runway, met with Glenda personally about the open position, and that Glenda needs an answer from the lithe hauterfly within the next week. While Nina is a devoted Elle staffer, it may be that recent tension between her and Elle Accessories editor Kelly Bensimon (wife of Elle top gun Gilles) would prompt her to make an abrupt career move towards Hachette's competitor, Hearst.
